Loss of Earnings due to no show electrician

Options
I am self employed, and had a boiler fitted by Help Link on Wednesday 16th Oct 2013. The electrician did not turn up on that day, so was told they would be at my property on Thursday between 10am and 12 noon. They did not show, even though they promised over the phone when I spoke to them in the afternoon. They then rearranged to show this morning between 8am and 10am, again they have not shown up. I mentioned to them that they should now come out at a convenient time for me which would be after 5pm tonight, but they refused. I have told them I am self employed and have now lost one and half days income down to them not keeping to their contract. I am able to claim this lost income from them, the supervisor said i could not claim.. Please anyone help!!

    You've lost 4 hours not 1 1/2 days.

    Read MSE's Failed Delivery article.

Although you are not talking about a delivery, the principle is the same.

That might be true if the OP was able to only take a couple of hours off each time, but if like many people, they have to take a minimum of 1/2 day off, then they would have lost 1 days work. (but I agree, I can't see where the 1 1/2 days comes from).

They're self employed so I assume just plans their day around the work.

It entirely depends on the nature of their work. Many self-employed people can't plan to do ANY work in one or two hour slots - they need to plan on the basis of a minimum 1/2 day slots, particularly where they need to travel to jobs.

And depends on whether they work from home too.

Although I suspect OP doesn't work from home else they'd have lost nothing.

You would have to prove the lost income, I suspect that the time taken to wait in would be free time with any work done either before or after.

So is there any real imcome lost, not many people make appointments that cost them real money.

Because the electrician did not show up on Wednesday 16th nor Thursday 17th in the morning.

But the Wednesday missed appointment by the electrician wouldn't have lead to the OP missing a full days work as they had already aranged for the boiler installation to be carried out on that day, and this appears to have been done as planned so irrespective of the electrician turning up or not, they still had to take time off that day.

There was then 2 missed electricians appointments -Thursday between 10am and midday and today between 8am and 10am.
So the op would have either had to take 2 full days off work, or two half days, and as they themselves brought the 1/2 day into the equation, it's reasonable to assume that it was 2 half days that they should reasobably expect to claim for.
