Looking for a new home for dog

Bit of a long story...short version is a friend (who already has 3 lurchers) took on another one, called Red, after his current owner decided she wanted rid of him.

Red's first owner was useless and kept him caged up in a tiny room all day with one short walk on a lead a day if he was lucky. He's a border collie X greyhound and an absolute sweetie of a dog, but he is getting bullied by my friends other dogs, so she needs to find him a new home ASAP. He's currently staying with me (this arrangement started a few hours ago) until tuesday, but whilst I would love to keep him, I simply cannot afford to have a dog right now.

So, I said I would help in trying to find him a suitable new home...anyone have any ideas? Apparently his first owner tried all the local rescues when she was initially looking at getting rid of him, and the closest one was away down on the South Coast (Red's home is in West Sussex - Horsham area), so not ideal. As a last resort he's being sent there on Tuesday, but I would love to try and find him a good home before then.

He's an incredibly attractive dog (will have to get a picture, but basically white with brindle patches, amber eyes and ears which try to stick up, but partially flop down. Personality wise he's great - gets on well with other dogs, no aggression issues, fairly mellow (especially considering he's half border collie). His only downside is he is a thief, given the chance, so food and bins needs to be kept out of his reach.

Does anyone know of any reliable rescue websites or have any contacts who might be interested in taking him on?

Cheers guys!

Try putting him on Dog Pages ( dogs needing homes,(private homings) ), you'll need to give them as much info as you can, is he neutered, are his jabs up to date, where about in the country is he, what's he like with children/cats ect and of course a photo will help.
  • You could try Valgrays Border Collie rescue for recommendations (as he's a BC lurcher type). If you are facebook type it into the search bar, she also has a website with contact details. She is the only one in the south which I'm aware of although I'm sure there are loads more. I'm sure you are probably more than aware of this, but please ensure he is not given away without homechecks - Valgrays has just this week taken in a lurcher with horrific injuries due to her being used as bait for dog fighting. Best of luck, he sounds lovely - I just wish I had won the lottery last night and could give up work!

Good luck. I hope Red finds a new home soon. I'd offer, but unfortunately I can't, sorry.

ETA: Dogs Trust have a branch in Shoreham as well.

I too would love to take him but as we already have two dogs, O/H would kill me.:(

Hope he finds a loving forever home though.
  • There are a few sighthound rescues that you could try

    http://www.lurchersos.org.uk/
    http://www.houndsfirst.co.uk/
    http://www.accoladehounds.com/

You could also try asking on The Hound Lounge as there are more members in the South of the country on there who may have a few more ideas for you http://thehoundlounge.proboards.com/

Good luck finding Red a new home - being owned by a lurcher myself, I know just how wonderful they are :T

Thanks guys...he's a year old, not sure about vaccinations (though should be able to find out). total sweetheart of a dog. I only have him tomorrow, then he's being taken to a rescue centre. I've managed to get some pics of him using my phone...they're not great due to poor phone and the fact he wouldn't stay still long enough. lol

Well, slight change of plans...Red's original owner, who was supposed to be picking him up from mine and driving him to the rescue place (her idea) has now turned around and said that Red is no longer her problem and she wants nothing more to do with him. What a nasty piece of work she is! I cannot afford the petrol to drive him to the place she had arranged as it's an hour away and I am unemployed, so today will be spent ringing round local rescues to see if anyone will take him.

Poor lad :(, I would still join Dog pages and ask if there's anyone who could help, there's usually someone who'll come up with a good idea ( go into chatter to ask ) http://www.dogpages.org.uk/forums/index.php?showforum=1
