Was looking at a car in arnold clark and when looking under the bonnet there was fungi on the fire protection (attached to the bonnet below the outer metal), what would cause this?

It has simply got wet and the matting provides a great bedding for any airborne spores to settle.

yip see this all the time when dealerships steam or jetwash the engine bay and its cold outside and they haven't dried it out correctly as its colder outside now its growing its own life form colony. if the cabin filter is under the bonnet it will need replacing as that will covered in fungi if situated in the scuttle panel.

You could remove it, soak it in antibacterial spray, completely dry it and refit, or simply brush off the surface mess and live with it.

If the engine bay gets hot enough through use that'll kill it off surely?

It's because there's not mushroom under the bonnet.

    I'll get my coat.
  • Apart from what you can see, there may well be further growths in the ventallation and aircon system (if it has aircon), especially in the dust and pollen filters.
The last thing you want is mould growing in these areas, and if you do decide to buy the car, it might be worth making the purchase conditional on this being checked out and the filters being replaced.
