That'd be great for the veg haters if they went to my sister's house - she has doll-sized hands, whereas I have great long fingers so could dish up loads :D

First of all, I wasnt expecting such a reaction. I wasnt trying to be confrontational, but I have to answer this!

Exactly what source can you quote then, if not scientific study by erm..... experts in nutrition? If it's all bullshine, what makes your pseudoscience any more valid than my pseudoscience?
All I am saying is that nutrition is a less developed science than something like chemistry. Working in a university and having eight years research experience I have some idea of how science works. As other posters have said the general nutritional recommendations have changed before and will change again. I was not offering a better answer, but I would urge people to be more sceptical and adopt a common sense balanced approach
FYI state registered dietitians spend four years at university studying for a BSc. They're every bit as qualified as physiotherapists, nurses etc and a darn sight more knowledgable about nutrition than your GP. Don't confuse them with those snake oil merchants who call them "nutritionologists" with a fake degree from Oompa Loompa Polytechnic.
Spot on, I agree with you here. However having a BSc doesnt really make you qualified in a scientific field - a degree is considered an entry for research training (ie for a doctorate)
Interesting point about chewing - whole fruits have value from the moment you open your mouth, because chewing is good for your jaws and gums. One of the concerns raised on the Jamie Oliver series was that children fed on pappy food found it an effort to chew fresh veggies.
Again, I agree with you. But I dont need practice chewing, so a smoothy is just as good as a whole fruit. I dont have problems with blood sugar so the GI thing is also of no concern to me personally
Have you never heard of complex carbohydrates? Even my 11 year old knows that whole grains etc are better than sugary white flour cakes - not all carbs are equal. Our bodies are efficient at removing sugar, that's because we have many yards of digestive tract to deal with it sloooooowly, releasing the sugar gradually. If you spoon processed carbohydrates into your mouth, all the sugar hits your bloodstream at once. This advice is extremely basic, we covered it in O level Biology 20 years ago.

Human beings aren't supposed to eat pre-digested sloppy food much past the age of 12 months. I'm not one of those raw food health nuts, but it's common sense that food is best for you when it hasn't been excessively processed in advance. That's hardly breaking news.
Steady on. I did not say anything about complex carbohydrates and again, I agree with everything you say here. I am just not sure what you are getting at? My point was about pureeing, not eating processed foods. Since liquidising is not going to affect the complexity of the carbohydrates in the fruit I dont see how this point is relevant.

Overall I dont really have any bones to pick with you (and I hope you dont either) Hopefully this is just one of those rash post things (on both our parts?) and if we had a proper conversation we would find we agreed on most things.

    If not, run for cover

Curry Queen, My little girl avoids morning food as well. Like you I've been guilty of pushing breakfast too much. I remember being forced to eat breakfast and bringing it back up so I'm trying not to be so obsesive about it but you feel so slap-dash if you let your kidz out the house in the morning with nothing in their tummies. My boys on the other hand have no probs and would take the pattern of the plates if I let them.

In trying to get kids to eat fruit I've realised that kidz are basically lazy. If you put a nicely presented fruit bowl near to where they veg out it is often too much trouble to get up and go searching for chocolate (especially if you put it in a different place each week;) )
We now boast fruit bowls in almost every room in the house

I think it's a case of leading by example and as neither I nor his dad ever eat breakfast we're not really setting a good example. On school mornings I've stopped pushing the issue, although sometimes I'll just make him something like toast or scrambled eggs and more often than not he'll eat it then, but they have a break with access to the canteen at 10am where he usually grabs a bacon roll or beans on toast.

The thing is he plays a lot of football, and is in both school and local league teams, so needs plenty of energy-giving foods! ... and what I really get annoyed about is when he goes off to a match on a weekend with no food inside him, but there's not much I can do about that (apart from nag him LOL!) as he's usually at his dad's then  (and yes, I've nagged his dad too LOL!)

He's very good at eating fruit/veggies though, one of his favourites being kiwi (packed with Vit C) and we always have a stacked fruit bowl, or he'll get a carrot or piece of cucumber to munch on between meals. I never buy crisps, sweets, biccies etc and any desert we eat is HM, usually with a fresh fruit element. He has his own money and can choose to buy sweets if he wants but I've noticed he rarely does since we've been eating Old Style ;)

BTW, he hates Jamie Oliver :rotfl:

  • Not strictly money saving but certainly in the OS back to basics/real food vein...

Today so far I have had:

half a tin of baked beans = 1 portion
    3 small satsumas = 1 portion (guess)
a glass of tomato juice = 1 portion
    an apple = 1 portion

I'm plannong to have some curly kale with my dinner tonight so that should get me to 5 portions. Not always easy though, is it?

    How is everyone else doing?

BTW - potatoes don't count and you can't just have 5 glasses of fruit juice (only 1 portion allowed to be counted however much you drink)

I'm rubbish at this cos I don't tend to eat while I am at work ~ apart from my lunch obviously  ~ so today so far I have had a mango and ginger smoothie which I guess counts as 1 portion and a glass of fruit juice bringing me up to 2. That means I need to have 3 more portions of fruit or veg with my dinner which is unlikely  I try but I don't always manage it.

    Hiya :)

We have an older thread on managing to do (or not) five portions a day and so I've added your post onto it.

Posts are listed in date order so you'll need to read from the beginning to catch up with us all.
