Remember it's only 5 a day because the government decided on that. The recommended amount in the US is much higher, and if you were living in a largely vegetarian community the 'target' would be irrelevant anyway.
Basically if you do not eat enough fruit and veg you will get 'bunged up' None of us has that problem!

This quote from Vanoonoo's signature just struck a chord with me.

Kids and I stayed with a schoolfriend of mine last year. Had a lovely time. THey're into OS, buying good quality food etc and were fed very well.

She has a rule that they're not allowed to have biscuits, cakes, sweets etc until they have accounted for their 5 a day. I thought that this was such a good idea.

I think it might have to be a rule for me. If I wasn't allowed chocolate until I had sorted my 5, I don't think there would be room for it LOL!:j

How do the rest of you ensure healthy intake for you and yours?

Hey, coffee and tea come from plants. That makes them vegetables.

i take a box of salad to work each day, about 4 portions, have fruit for breakfast and usually more veggies with tea but as i have already had my 5 it doesnt matter too much how much veg i have with tea. i normally avereage 8 portions a day. 5 portions is a minimum heathy amount the more the better1

I used that very argument today whilst being shouted at by the dieters/lent observers at work for hoovering up a very large piece of carrot cake. It wouldn't have kept....honest...

At work though, it is easy to top up your five a day intake - we are all doing it! Many a trade ensures you have a varied selection although disputes over how many carrot sticks constitute a fair swap for a banana need careful mediation

I have a similar rule - if were going to eat junk it has to be homemade.
I like your rule, I might have to adopt it too. I dont like giving the kids biscuits / cake before lunch. They snack on fruit all day so have probably had their 5 before dinner time, then obviously veg with dinner and often fruit for dessert too. I on the other hand dont tend to snack much during the day, but would have a glass of juice, then about 4 veg with dinner and a piece of fruit in the evening.

Based on your carrot cake / banana loaf theory, I finished off the last of the lemon and lime cake this afternoon (it needed eating guv'nor, and as it was my birthday cake, and being the chef I had the honour!). Lemons a fruit, and it was homemade so it must have been healthy!

I go with the wine = grapes. And of course the tonic water for the quinine to keep malaria at bay which of course can't be drunk neat so had to be watered down with gin. The quinine must be working - I haven't got even a hint of malaria :D

Jam is full of fruit too, so is cheese cake with a strawberry topping.

Seriously though, I take sandwiches into work and always ensure I add either some lettuce and tomato or cucumber and tomato to the sandwich - makes it more filling. That's two portions. I have a banana for after lunch at work then dinner always involves at least two veg plus potatoes - sometimes more if I'm doing something with onion/root veg in etc. It's quite easy really.
