Five portions a day?

I try (but usually fail!) to get my 5 a day in as early as possible during the day. I think that if I have a banana on my porridge plus OJ then that's 2 down already. Salad/JP/sandwich with lots of salad counts for another 1, plus a piece of fruit mid-pm makes 4 which only leaves 1 left for tea - veggies or whatever. As I said, I don't always do it but that's the plan!0

Hi purpleivy,
There's an older thread on five a day that should give you some ideas so I've added your thread to it to keep all the replies together.

I have pretty bad IBS and have been told its possibly now due to me not getting the '5 a day' or basically eating enough veg. I moved out from home a few months ago where most meals included veg or fruit of some sort. I plan my meals really carefully and am on a pretty tight budget. I do eat fruit and veg, but just not enough, as I do find it hard to buy loads of it for just me.
Is it possible to buy F&V cheaply? I am really worried its not going to work with my budget, and whilst I am quite imaginitve in the kitchen I do struggle a bit with more exciting ways to cook veg/what to have it with etc. Any help or tips would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks guys xx0 -
How about you tell us what you like and how you cook and then we can make some suggestions...

Aldi are doing a super 6 offer on fruit & veg at the mo, got 6 items (set items) all for 49p each. Red grapes (500g) are one of the 6! Should think there will be more info on Aldi website.

Crawleygirl- I pretty much like most things, dont find myself buying much meat as it is quite expensive. My Mum gives me chicken, sausages and fish. I am not a conventional meat and 2 veg girl so thats why I need help! Thank you xxx0 -
Go with what's seasonal. Also I don't know where you shop, but I shop in Tesco and buy their 'value' leeks, swede, apples etc. which helps with the cost. Also remember that things like tinned baked and red kidney beans (buy the value ones again) also count and you can buy other tinned veg / fruit. You could get cheap frozen veg which also counts towards your 5 a day.
