OS Daily Sunday 20 October 2013 This is an “over the garden fence” type thread where we chat about everything Old Style and maybe a little bit more. It’s a great, inspiring and motivating thread we start each day to discuss what Old Style things we’re going to do today or what we’ve achieved already. Everyone’s welcome, please do come in, put your feet up (although check the fence hasn’t just been painted first!) and join us for an Old Style natter. The more the merrier!

As this is the Old Style Board, it would be appreciated if posts could include some Old Style content. Please be aware that many people may have small screens, or slow internet connections, so please don’t post large pictures, or clip art – links are preferred. When you make a post, if you feel like giving it a title, that will help others that don’t have the time to read everything skim through the thread quickly but if not it's not a problem. Please do not start a new daily thread before you go to bed at night because this often leaves things confusing with two daily threads live at the same time. The idea is that a member would start each new daily thread after they get up in the morning.

Some people who chat here like to try to answer everyone. Don’t feel you have to though, a general “hi everyone, hope everyone’s well” is fine.

    ¡Hola!
Thought I would start you off today, as in theory I am an hour ahead of you all, though you normally beat me to the PC/Pad/Phone regardless.

Skitter Welcome, yes we do have a new thread each day.

:hello: Returners & Newbies, hope one or two of our old friends pop in and say hello.

Ivyleaf - Belated birthday wishes, didn't get round to posting yesterday, nice to see you back, this bad penny is still around one or two days a week. Welcome to the 60's club as others have said, you will still be waiting for your OAP, I have now got mine, it's nice to be paid by the Government each month :D;)

BB Hope Tilly is doing OK. ((hugs for her))

Weather out here is still warmer than usual for the time of year, (not complaining at that) and forecast looking pretty good for half term too. Been here 5 weeks now and now seen any rain, and none forecast until the day before we leave (thunderstorms) which may or may not get us, but typical when I want to wash everything!

Skye is still her happy self. but has obviously had something which has disagreed with her tummy, and Thursday & Saturday woke up to a mess, which resulted in yesterday being a blitz day from top to bottom. This is most unusual, but she is not listless or showing signs of being ill other than this. I have some medicine for her, which I have given her and this morning all is clear, so she is curled up with DH.

Weight eventually starting to move in the right direction, made the breakfast even smaller, lunch fruit, and salad with protein of some sort for tea (it was steak last night) and 2 pieces of dark chocolate. Does not take much meal planning :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

(((hugs))), spoons, hi-5's & positive vibes all round. Take care everyone. DG

Good Morning Donny And All Who Follow xx

Lovely to hear from you Donny - hope you are all well and Skye is doing ok xx

I had to strongly encourage the doogies out for a wee this morning as it is raining hard. Mean Mummy I am :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

Not much planned but have to go over to see my parents and take their shopping. I desperately need to tidy and clean.

Ruby - continuing to think of you x
BB - how is little doggie this morning?

I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer.
Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration.
I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over and through me. When it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path.
When the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.
  • Good morning everyone :)

I have a mountain of clean washing which needs drying and it's raining, so looks like the tumble drier is going to be eating electricity all day. Oh well the heating still isn't on so maybe that will make up for it.

Need to check the freezer and write a meal planner for next week, DH gets paid tomorrow but am trying to spend very little money because of upcoming roof repairs. I need to stop wishing about new job plus redundancy payments and the difference that could make :o

Talking of new job, need to do some reading today in preparation for tomorrow's interview. Also need to look what else is out there that I can apply for. DH is incredibly unhappy at work and has no idea what to do, he is talking about applying for other teaching jobs but then he says he feels like he has made no difference to anyone in his whole teaching career and just hates the entire education system now. Is there life after teaching? What do people do who used to be teachers and escaped?

Well wishes to all sick people and pets and hugs to those who need or just want them. Keep well and safe and have a super day :)

Floss2 - Yes, it's the food centre in Bodnant, have you been?

No, but we're planning to next time we go to Bodnant/Conway area - it's a bit of a trek from Blackpool though!

This made me laugh - I remember years ago when the boys were small, our cat black & white cat Sylvester would stick his head out of his catflap and if it was raining he would pull himself back in and go to sit by the front door to see if it was raining at the front. He'd get "encouraged" outside, and the boys would race to see who got to the catflap first, them or Sylvester!

Just wrapped my Christmas cakes in greaseproof paper after making them yesterday - earlier than normal but we are going up to see the in-laws late November so no point in paying postage when it can be delivered!

DH doing a few bits of work before he disappears til Thursday, I want to say hello to my allotment today - will be in waterproof & wellies as it is hissing down at the moment - just to see how things are. Need to put some laundry in and there's always ironing which will get done while watching European rugby this afternoon ;)

L/o courgette risotto (I really hope they were the last! :o) for tea, with h/m flapjacks for pud.

    Floss x

    Mornin all.

Have to get girls up soon as I am on book duty at church, dd2 is going to a rainbows activity day and dd1 is slower due to her sprained ankle. I have just made a list of things that need tackling today. I work better with lists otherwise I'm not focused and end up chilling too much like I ended up doing yesterday.

Dd1 can use her foot now. She is desperate to take the crutches tomoz to school which I wll prob let her as she has to go up and down stairs and people will then be aware of her injury and why she is going slow!

Yesterday I ended up taking mum to farmfoods as we got to the till i get out the 2.50 coupons and get the twenty questions of why she didn't get any etc. I wouldn't care but I had given her one, and she can't drive so can't get to the store anyway. The lady behind was giggling away at our banter, more so when I told her she'd be walking home if she was not careful! LOL!

Have a great day and even if you are busy remember to take your coffee breaks .

Maybe he is ready for a fresh environment where good teachers are valued, I don't know much about that sector but are academies any different? What age does he teach?

He currently teaches in a college, so it's 16-18 year olds and adults, it's a massive college over 4 large sites and each site has its own head. He currently works between 2 sites, teaching GCSE at one and A level at the other, the new head at the GCSE site thinks teachers should only teach GCSE or A level and doing both leads to bad results. No-one has any idea where she got this theory from but he is the only person it affects so no-one else is prepared to fight her on it and he feels really isolated. He says teaching A level further maths is the only pleasure in his job and he is about to have that taken away from him.

He has applied for other teaching jobs and got nowhere, when he asks for feedback, he is told they are really sorry but he is at the top of UPS scale and they just can't afford to pay him. Friends who are involved in selection process at schools say they are pressured to take NQTs for financial reasons and they lose many excellent, experienced teachers for this reason alone. With government new policy on no automatic increments, so they can keep newly qualified teachers on same pay for years, the situation is likely to get worse.

    Morning everyone

Hugs to all those that are feeling sad/poorly x

Wet but mild here this morning. Was just wet underfoot and grey looking - now it's that horrible continous steady rainfall that looks set in for the day!

DH and I were up enjoying a peaceful first cuppa of the day, DS2 has now surfaced. DS1 still in his pit - think he will be there for a while this morning - but we did tell him as he's been either at college or going to work with his dad every day this week he should have a lay-in this morning.

Had a lovely evening with friends last night, they came and collected us and then we got a taxi home - we took alcohol and thought we were just having drinks but when we arrived she'd done a lovely buffett so was a nice surprise - good friends/company, good food and drink and lots of laughs - best way to spend some free time! Was a bit of a lazy mare yesterday - couldn't really settle to anything - menfolk went to work so I shot out very quickly to get some beer to take last night. Did some ironing. Cleared the cupboard under the sink - ready for the guys to disconnect old DW and connect the new one - long story but we've been having an ongoing saga since July with getting a new part for the DW and they have sent 3 different engineers all with the wrong part and so 2 weeks ago I'd had enough and rang to put in a complaint and hey presto! within 2 days a decision had been made and they advised that they couldn't repair the DW and I'd get a voucher for the value and I could go and choose a new one! Delivery guys were great but managed to flood my kitchen floor as he said he couldn't turn the water off at the mains and every time he tried to disconnect the water pipe from the DW it wouldn't stop running, they were on the verge of just leaving as they couldn't turn the water off enough to swap the machines when luckily DH was home and I asked him to deal with them and he managed to give the tap another half a turn which then stopped the water running and they were able to swap the machines over and install the new one. Have just put it on a quick wash with a small load to make sure that the drain pipes are ok and are not going to leak - asked the installation guy to put the extra clip on (jubilee clip) so it doesn't come disconnected and flood the kitchen. (Had this experience before when I paid for delivery and installation for a new WM and the guy obviously didn't have a clue what he was doing) and just shoved the drain pipe into the drain pipework under the sink and as soon as the WM drained the water part the way through the cycle it completely flooded the cupboard and kitchen floor luckily I'd left the cupboard empty and had opened the door whilst it did the first wash to check all was well - lucky I did this as otherwise I'd have had a flooded kitchen and dining room and the carpet in the dining room would have been ruined too. A lesson well learned I think!

DH now gone for a bath - I'll go for a shower once he's stopped running the water. We need to go to the caravan to take some bits back and get some stuff out. DH will put the new bolts on the bottom of the gates whilst I'm organising the lunch. We're having roast lamb today - will be doing all the trimmings with it - so that will be going into the oven shortly for a long slow roast.

Hope everyone has a peaceful Sunday x

    Keep safe and well x

  • Morning all
We had thunder and lightening at 7 this morning, we were up as hubby was getting ready for work.
TTFM, academy's are worse, I work for one, everything is about money, expensive admin staff (those on over £12k) are being forced out and we are only taking on NQTs, no one any more expensive is being considered.
We won £38 on the lottery last night, so that's my housekeeping sorted for the next fortnight.
I had a lovely day y'day with DGD, there are pics on my blog.
Fingers crossed for you TTFM, Molly don't over do it, BB I hope Tilly is ok.
    Have a good day everyone.
    Hugs Hester
    Chin up, Titus out.
