As said, DO NOT overlook the auto renewed scam.
Call up and get passed the spotty goon on the first level of phone lines and make sure they know you are expiring any non-renewable contract as they have failed to provide a quote breaking the trust between you.
Also serve a notice in writing, they must give you a head office postal address .
Write a simple letter along the lines:

Served notice of contract expiry .
To whoever, notice is served that the policy number 98276492828 which expires date is to expire as per contract only and must not be placed on auto renewal.
    date
    signature

Post to head office, keep a copy and obtain certificate of postage which is free from a post office.

Or we can expect to see you back in 3 weeks when you get your new documents and they have debited your account with an eye watering amount.
Insurance companies do appear to select people at random for a go on the auto renewal confusion game, where they try to confuse you that you are the one who got it wrong.
But in this instant as they appear to be playing silly bergers you need to serve the antidote by post asap.
    Be happy...;)

Hi thank you, yes cancelled renewal & asked for a copy of NCD to be posted. They wouldn't even drop the quote price by £4...........sure renewal quote was never sent out, just maybe lost in post? Spacey you are certainly right about some of the reps on the end of the phone line.

    Thx again

The same scam that has saved people who have accidents after the renewal date and who have forgot to renew?

Ah, that's right, it's only a MSE SCAM to some.
