Personally I would go for an actual Kindle, rather than the Fire for reading. I bought a Kindle Fire HD when it came out and it was fine for ages (during the Winter), but as soon as I tried to read outside on a nice sunny day, I found it hopeless - way too reflective. I think that either paper white or the most basic e-ink model would be better for reading only. I don't think there's that much difference in the weight, when it comes to carrying them around.
OP's dad wants to browse the internet too. That's not a pleasant experience on an e-ink type device.
  • I have the Nook HD, which at only £79.00 for the 8Gb version is a great deal. I find it easy to read (the backlight is adjustable, as are fonts of which there is a good choice as well as being sizeable), and can also access the internet fairly easily. I have downloaded the Kindle app and get the best of both, including being able to borrow from libraries and also from other Nook owners. It also has an sd micro slot for even more storage.
