Tablet/e reader combo?

Hi, I am looking for a tablet for my 80 year old dad, who has no tech knowledge at all, and my own is limited. I think clarity of screen/fonts will be important and ease of use.
He wants to browse the internet and read books really, including accessing library books. I know you can download individual free books from Amazon's Kindle for Android, but I was wondering if there are any tablets where all those old books are preloaded, like you get on a Kobo?
I am looking at all the specs and getting confused. Any help/suggestions gratefully appreciated. thank you

Any tablet should read any ebooks .
Android has Kindle app and multiple other eformat apps .Suggest looking at Tesco Hudle Nexus 7 2012 or 2013

The Kobo is perfect for 'older' users as it's very very simple to use and you can change font styles and sizes very easily. The only problem is that the internet browser is not very good. I'm sure that Kobo is the only current e-reader to offer that amount of pre-loaded free books (100).

If it were me, I would go for the Kindle as it has the best subscription facility and one click payment system I've used on any e-reader. Also the internet browser is very fast. Once you set it up for your Dad he will be good to go, and shouldn't find anything confusing of difficult to navigate. They can change style and size of fonts with ease as well.

Just a comment that some local librarys offer digital ebooks to borrow for free online.
The service from my library is compatible with Nook/Kobo/Android and most others, but Amazon's Kindle unfortunately is not.

Ah, thought Kindle was the answer , but if you can't borrow books onto it, I'm not sure now.:o

There are other ways to access free books for a Kindle online. I just make use of my local library's service and know that it's not one of them.
  • A tablet is more versatile, but I much prefer an e-ink display, that you'll get on a dedicated reader. I found that a tablet was much too reflective & hard to read outside on a sunny day - not that that will be a problem for a few months, I guess! Might be worth having a look on ebay or the like - last time I looked Sony Readers were going extremely cheaply - he'd then know at least whether he liked the general idea of a reader.
  • I upgraded right through the Kindle models, eventually to the fire and although I like it as a tablet I ended up buying a nook as I found the fire too heavy and didn't like the glossy screen for reading.

I want to buy my adult daughter a kindle I havve the paperwhite but wanted to ask the question if I should buy this or the Fire. The OP has now said that Fire is heavy and there is a glare making it diffficult to read. My daughter travels every day by train 35 minute journey and also almost every week she has a long journey to London so this would let her read as she travels Weight would be important but I would appreciate more views on which I should buy! Waterstones are selling paperwhite for £89 and the Fire for £89 these are older models but I am sure that she would not be bothered by this.
    Thanks Sue
  • Personally I would go for an actual Kindle, rather than the Fire for reading. I bought a Kindle Fire HD when it came out and it was fine for ages (during the Winter), but as soon as I tried to read outside on a nice sunny day, I found it hopeless - way too reflective. I think that either paper white or the most basic e-ink model would be better for reading only. I don't think there's that much difference in the weight, when it comes to carrying them around.
