quite possibly likely to be true. Conservatives chummying up to their core voters.
I suppose that's why Scotland is included?

I think you'll find that the need to refer to the EU is not to change the rate but because they're proposing a differential tax, where some areas pay at a different rate to others.

That's open to a whole lot of abuse by a sitting government - see election sweeteners comment above.- and can cause serious economic distortion if misapplied.

I think you'll find that if we weren't part of the EU, we wouldn't need to refer to them for anything.

Agreed, but in this case I'd say it's no bad thing that we do have to. having a sitting government free to distort the tax system, for their own ends and without any oversight, really isn't good for a country - margial seat at the next election? Just drop their taxes by a bit.

Without Europe that sort of thing would have to be challenged through the courts after it was done. Europe ensures that it's looked at beforehand.

Incidentally, I'm not a great fan of the EU as a whole, and would be quite happy to leave it, but the world has more than 50 shades of grey so trying to see things in black and white is a mistake. Europe has its faults, but it also has its benefits - and this sort of oversight is one of them.

Looks like Unite will eliminate the issue of cheaper fuel for remote parts of Scotland and the North of England, if they screw around any more Grangemouth will be permanently closed.

What about Wales? Talk about trying to buy votes!!!

If you want to screw the Govt like they screw you, then do this; start a small business, register for VAT, pay the "scale charge" (around £24 at last count). CLAIM VAT BACK ON ALL YOUR FUEL!!

Remember, fuel duty is a tax, then they charge you VAT on top so you are paying TAX on TAX!!

And seriously, if you think europe does anything for us, take a BIG reality check. The whole point of having "different" political parties is to keep stupid people bickering over who to vote for, when in reality there is NO DIFFERENCE between the parties who are all run and funded by the elite to give the sheeple out there the impression they have a choice. ROFLMAO.

Have you ever heard the expression "It doesn't matter who you vote for, the government always gets in"? NOW you know what it means and more importantly...WHY.

Pretty pointless tbh, 5p per litre is absolutely nothing, and will do next to nothing to help those in rural areas.

We're 20 miles from the nearest town bigger than about 1500-2000 people.

There's two petrol stations within about 5 miles of here. Both of them are ~6-7p more expensive than in the "Big City" (which itself isn't very big).
Not that I think those in rural areas should get a subsidy anyway.
Because, of course, all people in the countryside are wealthy, right? Wrong. Low pay, long distances, zero public transport - and inevitably higher prices.

Tell that to Switzerland and Norway. They're outside the EU, but inside the EEA and Schengen and just as integrated with EU legislation - but without any say at all.
    What about Wales?

I suspect typo. Either fuel duty is devolved - in which case, Westminster has no say on the Scottish duty/price - or it's not devolved - in which case, Wales would be included too.

Looks like there are price rises and shortages coming to Scotland, North of England and Northern Ireland soon. Blindly following the woefully inept Unite union leaders, INEOS has just announced they are closing the petrochem site at Grangemouth. At the weekend while the vote was still awaited, the owner commented that if the Petrochem site failed to get backing from the workers it would close (it's the one needing the major investment) and the refinery would probably follow suit. Well done turkeys, your getting the Christmas you deserved.
