Pretty pointless tbh, 5p per litre is absolutely nothing, and will do next to nothing to help those in rural areas.

Not that I think those in rural areas should get a subsidy anyway.

Hmm, how will that work ? I don't know about any of the other places but Strathpeffer doesn't have a filling station and is about 5 miles from Dingwall which has competitively priced fuel available from Tesco (136.9 for diesel yesterday)

"But the Government has asked the European Commission......"

The problem is the EU! Britain used to be the head, but is now the tail.

I think you'll find that the need to refer to the EU is not to change the rate but because they're proposing a differential tax, where some areas pay at a different rate to others.

That's open to a whole lot of abuse by a sitting government - see election sweeteners comment above.- and can cause serious economic distortion if misapplied.

Yes, I was a bit puzzled about Strathpeffer, I didn't know there was no filling station (so perhaps it's the one at Contin that they're talking about) but as you say it doesn't seem remote enough to qualify. Some of the others certainly are though, such as Dalwhinnie and Achnasheen.

What measures will be put in place is to prevent the petrol filling stations just keeping prices the same and making 5p per litre extra?

    This ^^

Something we all seem to forget, when oil prices go down and fuel prices remain the same, it's the petrol stations that are being the greedy sods.

When prices vary so much between towns (they it's because of logistics in getting fuel there) and are so high on main routes + motorways (where it should be cheapest according to the above excuse), it's the petrol stations that are being greedy. It has nothing to do with the petrol producers or the govt...... It's pure greed.

When the local Esso has fuel at 135.9, why should the smaller independant stations miss out by selling at a much lower price?
There was one around here many years ago that was always 5p lower than the big brand owned stations, people would queue for 15 mins to get fuel there, it eventually got bought out and turned into flats.
