Warranty direct problems

Can anyone help with some advice please. My husband was contacted on the phone by warranty direct and took out some car Warrenty with them but told the person on the phone the car was up for sale and was told he could cancel at any time. We have paid 2 payments out of a total 4 for the year but the car has sold so asked to cancel the policy and stopped the direct debit.
He never signed anything but they have sent a letter saying because we didnt cancel within 14 days we owe £282.50 and a £50 cancellation fee.
It was april when we took the policy out and have explained on the phone and email that we were told we could cancel but they said they need proof.
Can anybody advise please?

What does it say about cancellation in the documentation that you received?
All matter is merely energy condensed to a slow vibration, we are all one consciousness experiencing itself subjectively, there is no such thing as death, life is only a dream, and we are the imagination of ourselves.

What was the total cost of the policy? (And why would you take out this type of thing on a car that you are selling?)

The person he spoke to said the policy could be cancelled but perhaps omitted to advise of any fees associated with doing this, which is a bit bad considering you specifically told them that you may not need it for the full term.

The £50 canx fee does not sound unusual but what do they want the additional £282.50 for?

Did you claim against the policy? If so you would be liable to pay the full policy price.

If you haven't claimed ask for a breakdown of the costs for the £282.50.

If the company records their calls you could ask for the original call to be listened to. You can make a request for a copy but it may cost you poss £10.

As stated above, there will be details of cancellation t&cs in the policy docs that they sent you.

If you feel that they have mislead you, make a formal complaint through the appropriate channels,

If you get no joy you could try http://financial-ombudsman.org.uk/

I have no experience with this company but just having a look at their website it seems to rubbish manufacturer and dealer warranties which I don't really like - they seem to suggest that you need this product even if you bought a brand new car

I couldn't find anything specific to cancellation fees just a tel no if you have sold the car and want to transfer the warranty. (Would this be a possibility for you?)

You can cancel the cover, but not without cost.

They charge a cancellation fee, and you will have not paid enough on the drip to get a refund. They give no refund at all if the policy has run 7 months or more!
  • I bought a 2nd hand car, Mercedes C200 for the first time. Then I googled for any warranty companies as I always do for any thing I buy. Warranty direct salesman convinced me saying they are the only company who includes ware and tare. Unfortunately after one month I had an engine problem in my car and been towed to the garage. Warranty direct took more than a month to give a report and finally come back and said they cannot pay for the repairs as they have 90 day ware and tare exclusion policy. They removed the total engine and striped it down to investigate and even for that they did not pay a penny. I did not wanted to strip the engine like that for no reason. Fist they try to find various reasons not to pay for repairs with car history, if that fails they will strip down everything and tell you about ware & tare and leave you in a deep thick soup. They are there to make money and not to help us. If we buy a 2nd hand car it always a risk. but paying for warranty direct on the top of that gives you mental relief as long as you will not have any problems of your car. moment you get a problem then warranty direct has 1001 excuses to not to pay your repair. worse thing is they take lots of time to come out with their negative answer. Not a good company at all.

  • Well I took out performance and prestige extra care 12 month upgrade thinking due to me having a mazda rx8 commonly know for engine issues would be good call. Paid £1100 for cover on car worth 3k but thought pay a bit protect alot. 2 week ago driving and load unhealthy sound come from engine so stopped. Followed every step you should as listed in policy so not to hinder policy claim. After waiting 2 week of sending docs ie mot, service, maintenance and finaly v5 because they tried to say car registered in july 05 but actually dec 05. Difference of 10% payable by me towards parts. So after receiving v5 said ok we will process your claim. Thank xxxx for that I thought finally....
Told me cost of replacement engine is £4300 they will pay £1600 of the claim as market price of car is £2800. They only pay to the total market price of car but then they deduct price of parts. To get the policy I had to pay for check of car £80 and service to bring in line with maintenance at £220. So if I want my car repaired by them I have to pay £2500 if want car back without repair I have to pay £800. this is for diagnostic removal of engine and reffitting to take away. Joke joke joke but im not laughing been ripped of and feel like a mug.
