Hi, I'm temporarily renting a house and will need internet, I can't sign up for 18month contracts or even Virgins 9 month student contract as I wont be there that long.
Can anyone recommend an internet service I suppose it would be a dongle that I can just plug into my laptop and use as and when I please?

There are one month contracts available.
There is also PAYG. But the max size PAYG SIM gives just 3GB, with an up to three month validity, costing around £14.
So you need to decide which fits your usage pattern, together with which 3G/4Gnetworks are available in your location.0 -
I use a 3 payg dongle £15 for 3gb over 30 days (or whichever runs out 1st)
I travel a lot and it works everywhere no probs, best one ive ever had:j:j0 -

If your getting a dongle, you might want to consider a mifi, lot easier than having a dongle sticking out of your laptop.0

You would have to see what the signal was like at the house and what your needs are before looking through the options properly. Otherwise you are just guessing.
That said some guesses might be;
You could try and get a neighbor to let you share their wifi.
If you have access to bt openzone or know someone who does and would share their login you can often find one of their wifi spots in most urban areas. (Most orange mobile customers get it free I think as well as all bt broadband customers many of whom don't ever use their login and might share it with you). Its often only 512kb/s but that can still be more reliable that mobile 3g.
Otherwise I believe Three have mobile plans that include tethering and unlimited data so if you had a good signal it might work. You could buy a cheapo smartphone and tether it on three. Or you could use it as your main phone and with the minutes and the internet for home broadband it might be quite cost effective? Though obviously that only works if its just you as when you are out of the house you take the broadband away with you...
Of course if you only want a few mb of broadband then there are a huge amount of options for you on all the mobile providers.

GiffGaff. Unlimited mobile Internet and texts £12/month without a dongle, but can tether to laptop WiFi or Bluetooth, or fit a cheap £2 WiFi dongle to your PC. You won't be able to use this for long periods though, as they don't like it. Occasional use, or limited daily usage and breaks inbetween fine.
GiffGaff do offer a dongle themselves though if you want mobile internet with regular usage. However, their dongles are bandwidth capped 500MB=£5/month or 3GB for £12/month. No contract and ideal for light usage, but watch out if you start streaming videos and as the cost ramps up. If you need to use a lot of bandwidth go for SIM card with unlimited internet Goody Bag and use WiFi tethering in that case, but don't tether everyday and all day.
Another alternative is Xilo. They offer £12.50 month 30-day rolling contract usage.. but you will have to pay £58 connection charge and of course need a BT phone line. They say you need to pay £63 for their router, but its a model widely available which can be picked up cheap off eBay and Amazon for a fiver.0
