No Claims Discount on 2 vehicles??? HELP

Hi all MSE's, We have 2 cars, one with NCD of over 9 years and the other, i am a named driver although it is my wife's car. I Had a letter this morning (16-10-13) stating that although i purchased the insurance in July, they would like to see proof of NCD. I then phoned them up to explain that i will try and send it to them ASAP. I was very surprised when i was told by them that in fact, the NCD applies to only one car. After some research, i can't disagree with this however what i am disagreeing with is the fact that when i bought the policy, it asked whether i had NCD from another company to which obviously i responded yes, it never stated that you can't drag it over to this one as well so as far as i was concerned, i would simply bring the my NCD over and use it on the other car as well. Where do i stand on this? Should they had made it more clear? Should i have know about not being able to use NCD on 2 policies? How can i insure this other car? Do i do it without NCD and increase the premium by over £1000? PLease help and advise of what we can do, many thanks

Has your wife earned ncd previously on this car?

If so cancel your policy and get her to insure it.

If it's a new acquisition see if your insurers will add it to the policy anx give you a discount.

Failing this ser if a local broker, not Swinton, can help you find a firm who will give you an introductory discount.
  • You dont need to see a broker to get an introductory discount, many direct insurers also offer introductory discounts and apply it automatically if you meet the criteria (normally based on age, length of license and claims history).

Some insurers used to allow you to mirror your NCD onto "your wifes new runaround" when you became a two car family (the last insurer I knew that did this did require it to be the wifes new car and below a certain rating) but as far as I am aware all of these have now stopped in exchange for multi product discounts - either as formally as Admirals or the more generic multi product holding discount like Direct Line.

Assuming they accept it was an honest mistake by you then they'll allow you to cancel the policy if you want rather than voiding it which will cause your wife long term problems (assuming the policy is still in her name)

My wife is still learning to drive so there for, (although the car is hers and in her name) she has no NCD. I will try and see if they will give me a discount, i should say that i am with Kwikfit and it is a new policy (15th of this month), unsure if there is a cooling down period? and whether to compare with 2 cars etc.

They will allow me to cancel for £50 but i dont understand why they left it 3 months after the policy was bought to tell me all this. I was genuinely unaware of not being able to use my NCD on her policy whilst i am claiming it on my own personal insurance.

Hence why they've given you the option to cancel it. Some insurers are very hot on this and will void your policy no questions asked within a couple of weeks of inception. These guys have been slower but come to a fairly reasonable conclusion.

You should have known it. And you do now. As with a lot of things in life your always learning.

The insurance no claims is not on the car. Its the policy holder that has the no claims. Your wifes 9 years belongs to her no matter what car its used on.
Her car or yours. She will be the policy holder to use the no claims.

It can only be used one one policy though. Did she have a policy on the 2nd car and earned no claims on that? Or is it a recent purchase?

If your a named driver then speaking to her company may get you an introductory discount. Or it maybe even cancel her policy and get the two elsewhere.

Lots of phone calls and tapping those calculator buttons.

When you go through their quote system, it says:-

Important: we can only accept your No Claims Bonus if:
You can provide written proof, in English.
Your no claims bonus was earned on a private car in the UK
Your no claims bonus is not being used on any other car insurance policy.
Your written proof is from a policy that expired within the last 2 years.

I should again say that the NCD is mine and not my wife's. She is a learner driver, the car is hers and it is insured under her name with myself as a named driver with my NCD.
Do you reckon that because i have recently insured my own car, is it worth cancelling it maybe and then speak to her company and see if they can do a special deal? I am unsure about any cooling down period that i may be entitled to.
I should also say that i am not disputing the fact that i can't use my NCD on her insurance whilst i am using it on mine, i'm just a bit peeved that they have left it this long before telling me (3 months). Is it down to them to begin with to tell me about this or is it common knowledge and is something that i should have know? Cheers.

I wouldnt cancel anything if the other company wont help then its going to cost more with cancellation charges.

If the no claims belongs to you are you the policyholder on both?

Im puzzled about how you have it all setup.

You had a car with yourself as the policy holder and main driver...yes.

You then got a 2nd car.. For the wife to learn to drive in? Or also your car?

Whose name was the policy taken out in? Yours or your wifes? Who is the policy holder?
How long have you owned that car?

Either way the no claims earned on the 2nd car started at nil unless you were offered an introductory discount and it belongs to the policy holder.

Just to confuse matters, It may be possible to switch the policy between spouses.

My head hurts... I hope i got that right...
