I have decided to go for an iPad mini with Bluetooth keyboard instead !!
This gives me the option of portability and also serious typing - with double the battery life of a chromebook.

iPad Mini is currently rubbish (poor screen resolution being my main complaint) and probably about to be replaced - Apple are making an announcement on October 22nd. Wait!

Thanks - I will wait until then
Do apple generally up their prices on new models or reduce them on old models - come new model time ?

Usually they leave price the same and old version gets bit of a discount, but they have good stock control to ensure minimal old versions available.
Current reporting though indicates they may be having supply problems with new retina displays for the mini so initial stocks may be limited in which case might be worth going to nearest apple store to try to reserve or get in quick when released. Announcement due on 22nd October but release date will most likely be a bit later.

OK Can you please confirm whether a payment card is required for setting up a newly purchased Ipad ?
To allow Apple to take money in the event that a user decides to download a paid-for app....

I got round it by setting up my iTunes account through icloud first as this allows you to create an account without a credit card

I don't know whether this also applies to iPads, but on iTunes I buy myself gift cards so there is some credit there, but there's no link to a debit or credit card.

    Check out http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2534

I don't have a credit card on my account - I have in the past and you can remove it whenever you want. I use iTunes vouchers (good for anything Apple sells since everything uses the same account) and I only buy them when they are on offer somewhere with 20% off...
