Chromebooks

I am thinking of getting a chromebook for their "instant - on" ability
However - I have never used Chrome OS before - what is it like ?
(I have 20 years of Windows behind me)
I assume that chromebooks don't need the net to operate - and can store data locally as well ?

Right - so you can't even run it - if you are out of WiFi range ?
Otherwise - whats the point in having even 16Gb SSD
They do say that they have 3 USB ports to save data to memory devices

I believe it has a 16gb internal storage capacity but you'd still need to use the OS (online) to do anything with it.

Also, there is 100gb of Cloud storage for free but oinly for 2 years, after that you have to pay.

I'm sure it will serve your purpose then and cheaper than a MS Surface RT etc

    Thanks - looks good
The truth is that work has offered me an ipad mini - and I prefer a proper keyboard (my age I guess) - so this looks the better alternative....

You buy bluetooth keyboards for ipads, but i cant imagine the asthetics are better than something like a chromebook.
I wouldnt recommend an ipad without an external keyboard. I often browse these forums on my ipad, but reach for my macbook to reply

I assume that Chromebooks come with basic word processing utilities "built in" and not relying on some on-line utility ?
Because I will need this - not having WiFi all the time....

You don't need to be online all the time at all. Loads of new features have been added and offline Google Docs, specific to OP's needs, is one of the things that's possible.
As a dry run, try doing everything on your computer inside the Chrome browser. Check out the apps that are available for it...
