South African Airways - claim too old?

We got married in SA in 2006 (January). All the advice seems to suggest claims can be made back to 2005 but court claims can only be made for 6 years (is that right?)
Anyway, I got a letter back saying thanks but no. I'm thinking of writing to the CAA as the amount is not insignificant (claiming for cancelled flights and subsequent missed connections for 4 passengers).
Am I right in chasing this or should I take the answer as final?
