I'd apply for the log book and see who was listed as the registered keeper, if the dad and the sisters are dealing with the estate I wonder if this could be handling stolen goods if the brother had no right to sell ---- although it's unlikely they will want to bring the police to the brothers door, and if they don't involve the police then there isn't really much they can do.
Tell them you'd take £600 for it0 -

Not good is it;)
I think that they should make it illegal for someone to buy/sell a vehicle without a log book, then again it would probably rob us of interesting tales like this.0 -
Whoever is appointed as executor of the estate (a rather unenviable position in these circumstances) should have sold it at auction, otherwise the whole family claim it was undersold, produce a "valuation" from somewhere and pursue him for their share of the money that he lost by underselling.0

I'd never before thought of the consternation a "bring and buy sale" might bring to some.0 -
ive since gone back to see the fella, , they knew where i lived by the the bill of sale ,he said he had told his sisters he had sold it , he explained 2 of the sisters had not bothered with his dad for years and when the dad passed over they turned up and was like vultures for 3 days taking things of value , i said i dont wish to be part of a family row , he chatted to me for half hour and made a cup of tea , said dont worry its yours and nothing will come of it,there just mad thats hes sold it , not doing no more now until log book (v5) comes from dvla then i will take it for test , i spoke to citizens advice and she said as i have the keys, invoice ,some paper work and proof of withdrawing cash it would be hard for them to take it off me . she said you dont have to have a v5 to buy a motor ,thats why they do a v62 to apply for one, and at 500 pound this would be about going rate for a 14 year old motor with no tax or test with over 100000 miles on it , she said it would be another kettle of fish if it was a 3 year old car for 500 pound that surely would be to good to be true and you would suspect something wasnt correct ,also that the log book is not proof of ownership and that a signed and dated bill of sale is and dvla dont require any form of probate papers etc to change name on log book , she said its down to the seller to put the money in the pot to share with his family and of no concern to me if he does or not, the problem is between the family and if they come back again to simply tell them to go away and shut the door and if they dont phone the law , she said this kind of thing happens everyday ......... All the best with it!
Just remember - where there's a Will, there's Relations.0 -
Police would be unlikely to act as it would be seen as a civil dispute.0

Congratulations seems you have a potential bargain there, albeit with the amusement of 3 mad women thrown in.
Hope it gets its ticket with nothing major.0 -

Those blue peter appeals would only have been half as successful...This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0
