a friend in the local cafe i go to at dinner time opposite my works, told me of a landrover for sale,it was for sale for 500 pound ,no tax or mot and 14 year old, i made contact with the man selling it, it had not run for a few months, long n short put a battery on it, half tin of easy start it fired up ,left it running, checked it over, tho it had a few faults ,they where easy fix , so paid the man in cash machine new 20 pound notes, he could not find the log book (v5) but had other paper work ,old mots, tax discs etc, he wrote out a invoice stating i had brought it off him and how much for he signed so did i,we had a copy each
i drove it out his garden/yard and hooked it up to my mates van and we towed it home on a staight bar,i i insured it there n then in the guys yard on the mobile phone .
Got it home no probs but because i needed to work on it ,then took it to my sisters as she lets me use her garage when its bad weather.
2 days later 3 mad women at my door demanding it back, saying it was in probate and he had no right to sell it,tho he gave me paperwork and 3 sets of keys,2 alarm fobs and locking wheel nut and a big yellow disc that secured steering wheel. long n short they started f ing and beeing ,i explained i didnt buy it off them and asked them to leave, and for them to take it up with the seller for there share of the money, next day its posted all over facebook that its been stolen with the reg freely given out, once again they came back but i did not answer door, of course i didnt steal it i handed over my hard earnt cash for it, so where do i stand i have a invoice,3 sets of keys and sent to dvla for log book (v5) with £25 pound postal order. ive already spent £120 pound on couple tyres and heater martix , at no time did the seller say it was in probate, ive turned up to buy just like you would if you saw it in autotrader, shop window etc, i really dont want to give it back as ive insured it ,cleaned n polished it,spent time n money ,plus its now a half decent motor tho its 14 years old and 130000 miles on the clock, anyone shed any light on this esp if your a legal eagle ,thanks in advance Billy:)

Seems cheap for a Land Rover only needing small amounts of fettling.
But how did they find where you have it since you have had it two different places since you bought it?
You need legal advice.
Logbook means little as that is just who is responsible for registering and taxing it.
Personally i wouldn't worry too much, send off for your logbook, that and the invoice and proof that you withdew cash at the same time would indicate clear title to me.0 -
You drove away a vehicle with no log book, from a man you didn't know, after being told about it by a mate in a cafe..............oooooooooookay thenBlackpool_Saver is female, and does not live in Blackpool0

Never ever buy a motor without a v5. Also you havent said what type of landrover but knowing the marque prior to the added snow tax you got a deal. I suspect thats why you went for it. However if it werent his to sell then it aint yours bought or not. If they have reported as stolen then dibble would b round to see you and have it back off you and all without a leg to stand on. But that hasnt happend yet......0

Assuming for a moment that the mad women are right and the car was not his to sell, then the legal position is that even though you "bought" the landrover in good faith, you do not own it as it was not his to sell. The women (or whoever is administering the estate of the actual owner) would have he right to take it back from you, without payment. Meanwhile you would have the right to your money back, plus consequential losses (cost of repairs, insurance etc) from the bloke who "sold" it to you, if you can find him and if he hasn't already spent it on skag or whatever. He may also have committed various offences of dishonesty, depending on what he believed about his right to sell the vehicle.
Not a nice situation to be in, but it's a risk you take if you buy a vehicle with no logbook from a friend of a bloke in a cafe...0 -
The thread title sounds like a name of a comedy film eg 3 men and a baby.0

Have you gone back to see the bloke who sold you it? Sounds like 3 sisters and a brother arguing over their dead dads assets.Be Alert..........Britain needs lerts.0

A friend of mine had a similar experience, he went to the police, sought legal advice but as the claimant couldn't prove it was theirs and my friend had the log book in their name there was nothing they could do and he still owns the car to this day (some year or so later).

Unfortunately, you have got into the middle of a family argument over money.
Whoever is appointed as executor of the estate (a rather unenviable position in these circumstances) should have sold it at auction, otherwise the whole family claim it was undersold, produce a "valuation" from somewhere and pursue him for their share of the money that he lost by underselling. (Believe me, I know, there is nothing like money to split up families)
No doubt the person you bought it off is not the executor, and had no right to sell it, so you are going to lose it.
If you can replace the old parts to leave the car exactly as you bought it I would, but you cant just remove the new ones.
It appears that you have increased the value of the vehicle to someone else's benefit, you can try to recover your expenses from the seller, but don't hold your breath.
Life is tough (then you die)
I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....
(except air quality and Medical Science)

I wouldn't go as far as "Never ever", but I'd definitely be very wary. The circumstances you describe would have all sorts of alarm bells ringing. Also you havent said what type of landrover but knowing the marque prior to the added snow tax you got a deal. I suspect thats why you went for it.
14yo - so very late '90s. £500 seems generous, if anything, if it was a scruffy petrol Freelander, for example.0 -
I wouldn't worry. You'll have Plod at your door if the bloke didn't really have the right to sell it.0
