Heya,

I am looking into buying myself a new tablet. Would like to spend £200 max. I had a Nexus 7 and had alot of hassles with it unfortunately, so would prefer to move away from them. I liked the 7" screen as found it easy for reading, but I wouldn't dismiss a 10" screen if it was the right one. I am not keen on the kindle fire as not keen on its amazon/android/butmoreamazon operating system. I think Ipads are out of my price range, so android is my best bet I guess?

Oh and a bit more to add, I don't need it to work on mobile network, its only for home wifi use

anyone got any ideas

many thanx in advance

Helen

    Hi Helen,

Have you considered 2nd hand iPad 2, 32 or 64Gb which you might be able to procure for about £250.

The iPad is still the best of the bunch for usability and build quality, especially as you've already said you don't like the nexus or the Kindle Fire, and with a new iPad about to be announced, second hand prices will drop again in a couple of weeks.

(I wouldn't recommend an ipad 1 as it can't run IOS7, and depending on what you want to do with it 16Gb isn't very much storage, especially as you can't upgrade it, so 64Gb is the best way of keeping it from filling up.)

Of course if you don't run games, or play videos or music you may be content with 16gb, but it's a good music and video player, and there are some really nice free apps as well. I particularly like Amazon's Cloud Player and Google's Music Manager, which runs on your home PC and uploads up to 20,000 of your music files to the cloud for free.

There is an excellent kindle app from Amazon as well as a great free books app.

Another vote for the hudl, so long as you can live with a 7" screen and WiFi only access. I have found the WiFi pickup is not as good as other devices we have in the house, which includes a Kindle Fire. Where two computers, a laptop and the Kindle get a low quality signal (from a Virgin Media notso Superhub), the hudl loses it. But it's fine elsewhere.
It is not as tied down as the Kindle, has access to Google Play and all the apps there. It does have a dedicated "Tesco button", but you're obviously not obliged to press it. Screen resolution is nice, sound quality is good. Tesco sell a nice little case for it, and screen protectors.
Also, if you've got any Tesco vouchers, you can effectively double their value if buying a hudl, as it is included in their clubcard booster deal.

  • The Hudl is cheap, but it's also slow. Great for the money, especially in clubcard vouchers, but would you do better spending more?

I had a few problems with my Nexus 7, spoke to a very nice man from Google in Utah, got a replacement in a couple of days.
Not looked back with it since.
That gum you like is coming back in style.

yeah the more I look online the more problems there seems to be. I have extensive list of issues with HMV and Asus, so getting it repaired one last time and cutting my losses!
