Car Impounded!

What u need to find out is - did the police send the vehicle to storage as part of their investigation - in which case they should instruct them to release it.
OR was it picked up and they then reported the car to the police who told them it was stolen - in which case they are handling stolen goods
OR did it get picked up, then your friend report it stolen, in which case, his own fault and insurane wouldnt pay out anyway.
Basically what was the surrounding circumstances in this.
My reason for asking is, your friend could legally keep the vehicle on private land with no insurance, and if stolen, he could not claim on it. But if it was recovered, it is still his property.0 -
Hi,
Insurance will be activated only once they find out if they can claim the car back without paying, if not then how do they go about scrapping it.
Surely they should be in their legal rights to claim the car back without paying anything?
Thanks0 -

It depends on the reason of why its there, and how long its been there.
If it is part of an investigation then you wont be charged for that initial period but after you're told its ready to collect then the billing switches to you fairly quickly if you dont collect it immediately.
If it was never stolen but was picked up for some offence you've committed as the vehicle owner then you are liable for all costs.0 -
Hi,
The car was stolen and then the police called to confirm they had found it and it had been left on a street and picked up by the pund.
They said it shouldnt cost anything to collect and that the investigating officers were on holiday. On contacting the pound they confirm they will not release the car untill £1000 is paid.0 -
Never Mind All,
the pound just called up to say they can get the car back for free!
Think the police called them after reporting this to them.
Great news and a happy ending.
Thanks all for the comments!0 -
It always amazes me how investigations come to a pause when an officer goes on holiday!0
-
Yep agreed,
apparently the car was found a couple days ago but as the officers were on holiday my friend was only informed today and told that the officers invstigating are still on holiday and if they need anything they might need to speak to them when they are back.
But all resolved so everyone is happy :-)0
