Taking rosie cat to the vets today, she has a very swollen paw that she isn't putting any weight on.
She is very old and hates the vets so am dreading it.
The thing is I don't want to put her through any invasive tests, don't want her staying overnight etc.
But if the only option is tests vs pts I will go for the latter.
Can't even believe I have written that feel so wracked with guilt and indecision.
What will the vet think, will she think I am a terribke owner worried about money, I assure you I'm not, I just cannot see her in distress and suffering.
Oh poor poor rosie.

I don't get nearly enough credit for not being a violent psychopath.

You're not terrible, you're doing it in the best interests of your cat. You've had her for a very long time, you know her needs and wants best. Your vet, if you have a regular one, will know her history and even if it's a different one, they'll see her reaction later and know where you're coming from - they deal with hundreds of animals a week and no doubt they've come across something similar to Rosie's behaviour too.
I hope today goes okay, and that she's just got something minor like a splinter. Whatever your decision, it will be the right one for Rosie and she'll know that.0 -
thank you she isn't eating and has only done one wee since sunday, she did go to the vets a few months ago she was very thin I told the vet I didn't want tests and she just told me to take her home and love her, not the same vet though.
oh god feel sick am really hoping she just does anti-biotic and wait and see.I don't get nearly enough credit for not being a violent psychopath.0 -
I can totally see where you're coming from, OP. In july I took my 17 year old cat to the vets because he wasn't eating or drinking and I'd already made the decision that if he needed anything that involved a general anaesthetic then I would NOT put him through the stress of it all and would have him pts. He'd had a good innings but was getting very thin and was fading away before my eyes.
As it turned out he had an oral tumour growing under his tongue and there was no treatment for it. If I hadn't had him pts he would have starved or died from dehydration. No contest.
You're only trying to do what you see as the kindest thing all round. I hope it's something that medication can fix. I wish you all the luck in the world. I'll be thinking of you.
Some people only exist as examples of what to avoid....0 -
You are doing your best for her. That's all anyone can do.0

You're not awful at all, you know Rosie best and obviously have her best interests at heart.
I hope everything goes well today and that it is just something simple.0 -
As the others have said, you're not awful at all. You have her best interests in mind (however painful that may be for you) and you're determined that she won't be put through any suffering.
Have everything crossed that it's something simple to sort out, am thinking of you both.0 -
Thank you all took her this afternoon, she has an abscess that burst on the way to vets, all over my mum!
He tried to clean it whilst she was awake but she was in so much pain he wanted her to go under to have it done staying overnight to have the op tomorrow.
Well this was exactly what I wanted not to do but what could I do, I couldn't have her pts because of an abscess.
I told him I didnt want her to be there overnight so he agreed to do it this afternoon.
They have just phoned and it's taking her a while to come fully round because of her age but she should be fine by 5.30 and I can pick her up.
Feel so guilty she was so very distressed when I left her and I am dreading seeing her, I was a wreck in the vets, they must have thought I was a right softy!I don't get nearly enough credit for not being a violent psychopath.0 -
I'm so glad it was nothing too serious and that Rosie will be home soon. I'm sure with some love and treats Rosie will forgive you. If only they understood all the trauma is because we love them and only want the best for them.0

So glad it wasn't anything major.
Just because we CAN do something for our animals, doesn't always mean we should, and some times, some vets don't always put the animal first.
Also, better a day too early than a day too late if an animal is in painPlease forgive me if my comments seem abrupt or my questions have obvious answers, I have a mental health condition which affects my ability to see things as others might.0
