Again, when looking at a show home I asked about storage space in the loft and was told not to put anything heavy up there.
Blame combi-boilers! Not so long ago your house builder had to support a 1 ton cube of water in the loft which meant putting your junk up there was no problem. No water tanks anymore so they have slimmed down the timbers.Mortgage Due to Start April 2015 - £165,000

Maybe you should have taken more than 10 minutes to look round it before buying.....
Here's where dappyduck wasted time looking for a Tancred quote...
Here's where dappyduck looked to consolidate his position looking for another...
... And here's where dappyduck couldn't help but reinforce his stalking skills by quoting yet another Tancred post to belittle him.
..... ad nauseum...
However, I do have sympathy. They don't build them like they used to....
Get the picture?

I was once involved in a field of engineering, and whilst it was substantially removed from anything like house building, I've always been amazed by how technologically backwards and conservative house-building is.
You do see all sort of interesting concept technologies on the 'grand designs type' shows but you never really see them move across into mass production housing that most of us have to live in (thanks to the developer-biased planning rules in the UK).
I share your thoughts on plasterboard, but frankly even standard bricks and mortar appears quite inefficient to me for many applications. Plasterboard was presumably designed as a new technology but the design seems very poor; it feels like it was engineered by a manufacturer rather than an actual engineer, if you follow me!
I find it amazing that we still produce houses in pretty much the same way as we did in in Victorian times. There are relatively few fields of human endeavour you can say that, even in fundamental industries like agriculture.
Anyone have any theories on why this is?
- bank not wanting to lend on non-standard constructions?
- the building lobby full of inertia not wanting to change practices?
- difficulties with administrative regulations like building standards?
- lack of critical mass for new technologies?
- can we not really improve in any way on standard technologies?
- conservative consumers?
- archaic teaching methods and skill base on the human resource side?0 -

Thanks for that. I hadn't thought about it but it makes sense now. The showhomes I've viewed had very tall immersion heaters (?) in a cupboard, but apparently not combi boilers.
About 2 years ago I replaced my old boiler with a new combi one and so gained some space in the loft. The timbers are substantial. And the loft has been full of heavy junk!0 -
I've had no problem hanging flat screen tvs, heavy mirrors etc on plasterboard. Use the right tools properly and correct wall plugs and its no different in my experience when it comes to putting stuff on the wall.An opinion is just that..... An opinion0

Post 2 by DaftyDuck is just plain silly & makes the OP feel about 2 inch tall!
What has the 'past' threads got to do with Tancred's rant about plasterboard?!!!!
Un-called for IMO. :eek:0 -
Mains pressure unvented hot water system.
Thank you,
What would the boiler be? I did ask about the system but the sales person wasn't able to give me a clear answer.
New houses seem to have at least two bathrooms so perhaps this is the most efficient way of supplying the water demand.0 -

Because, in that earlier thread, Tancred laid very heavily into people who spent longer than 10 minutes looking at a house, saying that was all that was needed to learn everything you needed to know about a purchase, and any longer was just silly. Many of the 14 people who thanked me in the above post took part in that earlier thread. That is exactly what that past thread had to do with it!
As I added, I actually agree with Tancred who, I am well aware, is quite up to a robust riposte if he feels like it. He's not one to hold back!

Most likely a gas boiler.
Yes I believe it is the best way to supply hot water at a decent pressure to more than one bathroom.
My house built 11 years ago has this system.0
