My daughter is off travelling and has decided not to take a mobile due to costs.
Can anyone advise of any reasonably priced deals around as I would prefer her to have access to a phone 24/7 for my own peace of mind.
I would appreciate any suggestions you may have.

The cheapest way is to get a local SIM card in each country. There's lots of guidance on the following web sites:

International SIM cards tend to be much more expensive because they involve roaming and payments between companies rather than using a SIM card belonging to the network being used.0 -
Where is she going?
Edit: if you just want to keep in touch with her, make sure her phone get wifi access and use whatapps/ skype.0 -
If it's just for emergencies, a cheap pay as you go (PAYG) is better than no phone. A standard phone which doesn't do internet will only attract charges when you use it to call or text. Prety sure that all networks have the capability to add cash online, at ATMs or supermarkets (ie by you from the UK).0

Get a really basic PAYG phone from any supermarket. Then check its unlocked and unlock it if required so it can take any networks sim card.
No loss if stolen, and will last for days on a charge, which may be useful if she's somewhere with limited access to power, and can have any card put in if she needs to call urgetly and has no credit on the "home" card.0 -
Depending on exactly what sort of travelling the answer may differ but a cheap unlocked smartphone might be best as it would allow access to email etc. via any available WiFi and could be used with a PAYG SIM in any country.
Suggest you look in Carphone Warehouse but don't mention travelling or unlocked as they may get sniffy !. As they sell all networks their phones are usually unlocked.
Look at the Samsung Galaxy Y £40.
Vodafone is possibly the best "big" network to use abroad and may merit the top up.0
