Killing mature tree
Whats would be the best way to kill a mature tree it's about 30ft high, on my fathers land no tpo in place, we don't have access to a chainsaw and as its in the middle of his land with no surroundings then I'd say its safe for it to be killed at ground level and dealt with from there when it finally falls etc,
I am a herbicide sprayer by trade so have access to roundup pro biactive what would be the process using weed killer? Only ever sprayed small invasive weeds previously.
Also heard about a copper nail in the stump?

Hubby got told to cut the bark all the way around - about an inch or two and that would kill a tree0

Even if you kill it it could be decades before it falls. Just hire a chainsaw for the day and get it down. Alternatively, in your line of business do you not have a mate or contact who could lend you one? What type of tree is it?

I have a felling axe and a 2 man ripsaw you can borrow.

Advertise on gumtree as standing lumber and see if anyone bites.
Although when a friend did that, 3 lads turned up armed with chainsaws and beer. They did a good job but it was terriying watching as it was an accident waiting to happen.0 -

It's a very hard twisty grained wood especially when green and I am not spending a morning sharpening an axe or a day sharpening a saw.The truth may be out there, but the lies are inside your head. Terry Pratchett

Just use Roundup in the spring, it will take a few years to die, but die it willWhen an eel bites your bum, that's a Moray0

My question would be "why?"
What is the point of killing a tree and leaving it in place, so you have a dead tree in the way rather than a living one?
It will take many years, maybe decades to decay enough to fall down on its own with branches randomly coming down when there's a wind.
If you really need to kill it you can strip the bark off from a strip around the trunk. Most broadleaf trees will sprout from the trunk below where the bark has been stripped and you'll need to use herbicide on it, most conifers will not.Solar install June 2022, Bath
