My mother says something similar - "if people waited for the right time to have a child, the human race would die out".

In relation to costs for children, my son cost very little as a baby, because my mother had kept things like moses basket, cot, endless clothes, etc. I breastfed, and later he ate what we eat, and we used washable nappies.

The massive costs have been the money I didn't earn when he was a baby, and the childcare costs once I went back to work. We pay twice as much for our childcare (£26k / year) as we do on our mortgage interest.
