One thing re pets, they get more expensive as they get older so whatever figures you work out now, leave extra for that.
    Kids too :rotfl:

Seriously, a guy I knew well once said to me, if you wait till you can afford kids, you'll never have them.
    Truer words were never spoken.

Before you have kids, do all you want to do. If you want to go round the world, do it. Want to go to hedonism? Well you'd be better to get that in first.
Freedom is not worth having if it does not include the freedom to make mistakes.

Just figured out that I spend £870 a year just on piano and swimming lessons for the kids

I think I'd need therapy if I ever attempted to cost how much I'd spent on childcare :(

Oh and with dogs, don't forget to figure out damage costs, I've just had to patch fill and paint a wall and some doors, buy gates to stop them getting into the kitchen to reduce this damage, £50 for a lockable bin which one dog can still get into (I have children who seem to wander at night, leaving the gates open so I might add the cost of a spy camera to that lot so I can figure out how its happening lol), thrown out a very expensive rug and spent days shampooing carpets (add costs of a shampooer too). The dogs are a year old. And I'm around all day. And they are walked for at least an hour each day lol.

I know it sounds insane lol., but every time I think I've cured the problem.., the darned dogs seem to figure out a way around my solution lol.., I think I'm either going to be rehoming the dogs or the children :P

One of the dogs was attacked at two months old.., we didn't have insurance as we'd just started taking them out. That cost £500 in vet fees. With insurance, you either have to find a vet who will direct bill whichever company you insure with or keep some money aside for emergencies (like that £500 we had to pay over a weekend).., and remember the insurance policies usually have a £100 excess so u will end up paying most of the cost for small things that don't need repeat visits to the vets. There's also the cost of flea treatment, that adds up.

If you are both working.., don't even think about dogs.

I hope DS will get cheaper as he get's older. Surely he can't cost more than the £1000/month we pay now in childcare cost later on!

If you want cat train her well early not to scratch anything. We won't be changing the old carpets in our new house as long as she's around. She was already 10 when we moved from laminated floor house to carpeted and she goes out less (used to be out all day) now so the carpet suffers as she's home alone during the day.

Whatever you want to do, ask on MSE. You may well get a sensible answer, as well as a spirited exchange of opinions.
Broke or billionaire, I wouldn't be without my lads & since that currently includes going without some things, well, I reckon they're worth it.
Like shampoo. You can buy supermarket value or top end snake oil - and they still do roughly the same job. Just a very different one to your wallet.

The simple answer is - more than you can possibly believe from when they are born to when you die!!! But they are worth it!

I reckon my cat cost less than £500 a year, all told. Well worth it.

My wife brings in a surplus, so good value.
  • Moving in together / getting married is saving us a LOT.

Pets, not so much. My cat has cost about £2.5k in the last three years, but he's not been well. Such is life.

Kids, well, it really depends on whether you believe they benefit more from your time or your money. Most people tend to believe the latter, so they end up costing a fortune.
