TV licensing again!

Options
My daughter has just moved into a shared house with other students. Each rent their own bedroom but they have a communal living area, with a television in it (which is licensed). She has been receiving letters, not addressed to her by name, just as occupier of flat 3, from tv licensing saying they are going to take her to court for not having a license. She doesn't have a tv in her room and doesn't watch it live on her laptop.

She is very upset by this (she has autism and mental health problems). What does she do? If someone turns up at the communal front door and gets let in can this person go through her room?

Just ignore them, and dont let them in.

when i was at uni, they used to try and target students with stuff like this hoping they will pay out.

we just refused then never heard from them again.

Thanks Cycrow. I have told her to ignore it but she is scared to. Is there a letter I can write telling them she doesn't have a tv/watch tv live and telling them not to call round?

    Many thanks

Just return unopened and put flat 3 and a question mark and never let them in.

Make sure the other housemates do the same. Never give them a name and not to let them in.

You can fill in a form online and the letters will stop for two years. Many posters don't recommend speaking with them at all but I did get sick of the letters...filled in the form online without identifying myself and the letters have stopped.

If you want to take things further, you can complain to the Head of Revenue Management at the BBC.

It may be necessary to do this, anyway, since many people report that filling in the online form doesn't work.

In my view, the letters they send are completely inappropriate, partly because the tone and misinformation is not suitable for vulnerable people. (Therefore a breach of DDA?)

No. Pointing a camera at them should promote a speedy exit.

Does the letter say they are taking her to court or that they can or may take her to court?.

It'll be this scurrilous letter - it's sent to people without there being any evidence of evasion whatsoever. (The clue is that it's addressed to "Dear Sir/Madam"):-

  • Oh, I've had quite a number of those, there was even one waiting for me on the mat when I moved in in July.:D Plus various others threatening visits. Quite disappointed I haven't had one yet. Anyway, I shall be watching England on the box tonight so I hope they call.

I'll be down the bowls club with a pint.
