mennie, my daughter in law is an HR advisor for a national company. she has a company car and travels once or twice a week when she visits sites. her job is very varied and she enjoys it. have you thought about investigating being an HR adviser for a larger company based upon a "patch" around where you live. You might not need to commute on a regular basis. Norwich Union comes to mind.0

Hardpressed - no I couldnt consider temping when we are taking on a mortage.
Big Bloke - I dont drive yet and the whole reason I am looking for new job is because I cant handle the commute
