Advice Please

Hi I m not an active member I browse from time to time. I am always amazed at your inginuity you seem to all be so resourceful.

I am hoping to get some advice. I currently commute to work and spend a huge portion of my salary on train fares and a huge portion of my time too. Its really getting me down and I am started to have quite black days. I have deciede its not worth it and have applied for a Part time job in my town (there are no full time jobs here, I have looked forthe past 9 months)

The new job would be 25 hours a week and would leave me a little short money wise but much much much much much happier. I have an interview on Tuesday so fingers crossed.

If I were to get this job I need to substitute my income/make cut backs to the tune of around £80+ per week.

Any ideas? I already do some survey sites and paid to click but admittadly dont have much time. Also do a little ebay. Any help would be greatley appreciated.

    Hi mennie,

Sorry you're having a hard time at work. Could you get a bar job to supplement your income a bit more?

If you have children, you may be able to get additional Tax Credits?

Otherwise, have a look at the Debt Free Wanabee board. They are a nice bunch over there, and if you post your SOA (see the sticky threads at the beginning of the board) I'm sure they will come up with some ideas to cut back on your bills.

Best of luck with the interview! x

Firstly, I really admire you for putting your enjoyment of life above the pursuit of money! That said, you do need to keep the wolf from the door so I have a few suggestions:

What kind of work do you do and what are your hobbies? Have you got any skills you could utilise to do private tuition in? That is relatively well paid and can be fitted in around your part-time job (good luck with the interview by the way). If people find it hard to get a job in your area, having work related skills (e.g. book-keeping, touch typing, languages, ICT) might be popular.

Alternatively, again depending upon your interests and skills, something like dog-walking, part-time nanny (if your part-time hours would allow you to pick up children from school, take them to their own homes and care for them until parents get home etc), carer for the elderly (in their own homes) are all much in demand in my area. The person I spent ages trying to find was a part-time cleaner for my house... even offering £8 per hour (so 10 hours work per week to make your £80 shortfall) it took me ages to find anyone who was willing to do it. Every cleaner I know has more offers than she can possibly manage!

If you let us know a bit more about yourself we might be able to come up with some more suitable suggestions.

It's worth having a look at the OS board if you are thinking of ways you can cut back on your household bills. By using some of the tips on there I am spending probably about half of what I used to spend on groceries etc.

Thanks for your replies so far.

Dont think I have any skills I can teach. Had been thinking about putting cards up in the supermarket and taking peoples ironing in.

Just hope I get this job as the one I have now makes me so miserable.

I have come home today with green spots alover my throat and cant swallow. Must be tonsilitis. Going to try to get into the doctors tomorrow. So you think I should still go to the interview or explain. I think I should go but my family think I shouldnt.

Nenen What would you like to know?

I am newly married, 27 with no children. Just put an offer on a house but rent at the moment.

Sorry but I am new to all this

    Thanks

    Hi Mennie

If you feel up to going to the interview go, but make sure you tell them you have tonsilitis, it'll make you look really conciencious (Sure you are anyway)

I think Nenen meant things like what skills or hobbies do you have, (like if you can sew you could start altering clothes for people, or if you were REALLY good you could make 1 off items like wedding dresses) I have a friend who can paint so she does portraits of peoples pets from photographs they send her.

Most of all Don't let the bast***s grind you down;)

Try asking hubby what he thinks you're good at, if nothing else the look on his face and at least one of the answers will make you laugh:p...

...but it probably won't be anything you can do to earn money;)

Exactly that kind of thing Helzbelz! Just brainstorming ideas to try and think of things Mennie might enjoy and earn money from (legally) :D;) !

Also, what job are you currently doing Mennie and what was the interview for?
Have you got any qualifications? As you are relatively young, what are your top school/college qualifications (e.g. GCSEs, A levels, NVQs etc)?
What do you actually enjoy doing?
If you could wave a magic wand, what would your ideal job be?
What do you think are your strnegths and weaknesses?

I am currently a HR administrator full time and the position i applied for was an admin assistant part time 25hours per week

The only qualifications I have are my 9 c grade GCSEs
I have spent mst of my working life on hotel receptions

The interview went ok, still havent heard yet though. He had some trouble understanding why I wanted to go from full time in the city in a world renowned restaurant to part time in a small firm. I explained all my reasons but dont think he bought it.

To be honest my ideal job is stay at home mum - sad I know. We are thinking of starting a family in the next 2 years and I can wait. Theres nothing else I really want to do. To me a job has always been just about paying the bills.

My strengths are I am conscientious, good with people, calm under pressure, extremeley well organised. Biggest weakness is I am a control freak and have problems saying no.

Really dont think I have any skills I could make money from (legally:cool: )
If I do get the job I am really thinking on taking in ironing though. That should boost my income. If I spend more time on Ebay and Surveys, Paid to click sites I could clear £45 from that so would only need £35 per week extra.

    Thanks for listening

How about doing an evening course (or round the new part time job) in Child care, then you could do that to earn money looking after kids after school, which would also fit in with being a stay at home mum
