Which 'gadget'? Internet access, screen, etc.

Okay, I'm going to sound very un-techy now. Used to be up on everything but am now feeling very out of touch with it all!

Basically, the netbook died. The BF wants/needs it, and I'd find it handy (I use my phone for internet at home now, but his is a VERY old phone!). Want to get a replacement for netbook but no idea what to get.

These are the (basic!) requirements:

Screen (bigger than a phone, netbook size is fine)
Keyboard like a netbook/laptop (bottom half under screen)
Excel (keeps logs of football teams/stuff)
Internet access (faster the better obviously) (got wi-fi so no need for dongles (right word?!) or whatever.

That really is pretty much it!

I don't want to spend hundreds. Fifty quid would be ideal. Don't mind second hand - just really don't have a clue as to how old things are I'm seeing on ebay/amazon, whether they'll be horrendously slow and a complete waste of money (some reviews I've read on say things are very slow).

What do we need? Netbook? Laptop (if cheap enough)? Touch screen whatever? No idea on memory needed, etc.

If anyone nice techy-bod could give ANY suggestions, it'd be a major help! I'm going round in circles and have stopped looking cos I just don't actually know what I'm looking for!

(Sorry for being completely blonde in relation to all this! Please reply in basic terms! :D)

If you want a real keyboard, and you want to run Excel (a proper version, not one over the internet), then it sounds like you need a new netbook. Despite reports of their death, they are still available.
    If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.

Thanks. The new ones are too pricey and I've not got a clue what I'm looking for second hand. Maybe I should source the exact same one. Hmm. Thanks for helping.

You can buy a tablet with an external keyboard and case for under £70 on ebay. No idea what they are like but they might be a start although you may struggle with Excel unless you get an appropriate app.

Thanks wiogs, will have another look at work tomorrow

Not sure what happened, the screen just got all these lines across it and it looks like there's a tear under the screen even though you can't feel it. Saw a couple of others on ebay for spares with same problem

Might have to wait until Christmas... hmmm. Sounds like it's gonna cost me. Will ask the nice IT guy if he can help re the screen. Did say there's a spare tower at work so I might take one and see if I can get a desktop rigged up at home.

Thanks for the input, all! :)

Can't post a pic right now as it's at home but will try to remember to do it later/bring it in tomorrow.

typical cost for replacement netbook screen circa £40 (depending on model, of course) and half-hour or less of screwdriver time.

You could always connect it to an external monitor for a quick fix :)

I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple :D

Ooh how do I do that then? Sorry, really blonde now when it comes to all this! And to think I was the only one who could set the video record thingy at home lol. Feeling old, technology's overtaken me!

    THANKS :)
