BT - cut us off in error and taking weeks to reinstate broadband

Some weeks ago a sales person rang to offer us an alternative broadband provider to BT. My husband VERY carefully said that we might be interested in knowing the cost but were NOT making an order. The saleswoman kept referring to the 'order' and the 'switch over'. A week or so later a letter from BT arrived saying how sorry they were to lose our custom. We told them they were not, and another letter arrived saying everything was fine and nothing would happen.
Almost three weeks ago BT cut off our broadband. We have been in daily contact, had a load of customer service schmooze, but are still not connected. Has anyone else experienced this? Do we have a claim of any sort against BT (we are paying for something they seem incapable of providing)?
We reported the first company to Ofcom, but they have admitted over the phone to mis-selling!

You'll get a credit for the downtime if you ask. And possibly a small goodwill payment if you ask again.
Don't ever even consider buying a service that was cold called-you'll always get a better deal online, and that way you can keep the commission. No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -
