Which TV to buy?

Hello:

I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions and know of any good deals for TVs. My current TV has died, it did last me 10 years and I think its a good time to get something new!

I would like to get something that hangs nicely on the wall (as thin as possible).

We are sitting about 3-4m from the TV set so I'm thinking 47inch or 50 inch is probably the right size (although finding it difficult to find much in the 50inch range).

A smart TV would be great and I do a lot of Skype calls to family abroad on the PC so it would be great if I could do the skype calls from the TV.

I like the LG and Samsungs but open to any good quality brand.

So far I am leaning towards the LG 47LA860W but its slightly over my budget at £1,249.

I did look at going down to the 47LA740 but the reviews seem to suggest that the picture quality isn't so great, no integrated camera for my skype video calls. Although I have not seen it for myself and maybe I can add a camera. Price about 1k.

any suggestions on good deals for the 1,000ish mark would be great. thanks

  • Have a look at the Panasonic Viera range. I have a plasma one and no hesitation in recommending them. Panasonic price matched the lowest price I could find and included their own 5 year guarantee.

I've had a Panasonic Viera for 5 years and its been brilliant. I chose it to go on the wall as its got built in Freesat.

It was the only one on the market with built in Freesat at the time so I expect more will have it now.

Is the wall it's going on plasterboard or brick?

  • Another vote for Panasonic.

I've heard reports of poor sound quality on Samsung TVs compared to others.

Dry lining plasterboard. But I reinforced with a panel of hardboard bolted into the timber frame.

Yes, actually since the OP I have looked at this and compared side by side with the LG I think Samsung looks better.

Thanks - This is now the front runner.

I haven't really looked at Panasonic. Could anyone recommend a specific model for £1000 50inch or £1250 55 inch which I could compare with the LG and Samsung please?

You could compare with this PANASONIC VIERA TXL47WT50B 47 inch 3D LED Smart TV 1080p HD Freeview HD freesat circa £800
