Cancelling My Virgin Broadband - What about my emails ?

I am cancelling Virgin services including Broadband and wondered what I need to do to access my emails.

I do have a Hotmail Email Account (Live.co.uk). If I transfer my Blueyonder emails into the Live directory on my laptop, will I be able to access them on my laptop when I move to BT ? Also do I have to reset my account details from Blueyonder for BT Broadband. It has been so long since I set up my email account with Virgin, I cannot remember what you do ??

By the way my email programme is Windows Live Mail ;)

TIA ;)

If you already have an email address that is independent of your ISP, like your live.co.uk address I wouldn't bother setting up a new address with BT as you will more than likely loose it when you change ISP again.

Old emails from your old ISP email account should be saved for later viewing but I only use web based email so not sure how to archive.

At some stage you will find the Virgin Emails /Blueyonder are deleted along with the account .

Hotmail is the same on any ISP just set it up if needs be .

Your new ISP will give you the setup details for email

Keep your Virgin emails as they are until closed that way you can pick up any but not send .

My daughter has just been to visit and she has suggested that I set up a "GMail" account. She said you can access any email account from any ISP as long as you have your log in details. Not sure if I can access my Blueyonder emails on Hot Mail as it is set up as an "alias" email address.

Yes, you can access Gmail via webmail, or set it up to download into any desktop email client-just as you can with Hotmail. Both are ISP-independent.
I'd go for Gmail every time though.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
  • I cancelled virgin right around the beginning of this year (Jan 2013), and setup a new Gmail account. I continued to use Windows Live Mail to access both the old virgin account and the new Gmail account, and told all my contacts to use gmail. Although virgin initially said, I would only have 30-days to access my old emails, It has actually taken virgin 10-months to write to me to tell me they will withdraw the virgin email!

The other bizarre thing is that virgin actually use gmail as their platform!

So, best not to count on it, but you may be able to access it longer than you think!

Well that's good to know although I have moved all my emails to my Live.co.uk email account and changed my email details with all the important contacts I have like utilities, banks etc.

    Hopefully it will be a smooth change-over ! ;)

I think I spoke too soon :( Came to open my email account today with Blueyonder and after the programme opened it would not download the emails. Tried a few times and then the account locked me out and told me to try again later. I also had problems with my Rapport Trusteer Report and had to download a new version and restart my computer, although their Chat line said changing email addresses with sites I use including my bank shouldn't affect the Rapport Reporting system !

Don't you just hate computers sometimes !

I'd start by uninstalling Rapport, which is itself spyware.

I actually installed the new version for my browser which seems to be working OK now so didn't need to uninstall it. Only time will tell ;)
