Nokia 105 sim free and three sim card

I am looking to purchase this phone for my 9 year old.

http://www.carphonewarehouse.com/mobiles/mobile-phones/NOKIA_105/HANDSET

I already have a three PAYG sim card so was looking to purchase the sim free version. Went to CPW today and was told it wasn't possible as three sim cards are only accepted in three phones??
I thought sim free means any sim card?

Any advice?

Thanks

To use a 3 Mobile SIM in a handset, it needs to be 3G compatible. The Nokia 105 is 2G so unsuitable. This handset here appears to be the cheapest 3G compatible handset currently at Carphone Warehouse.

I agree with Espresso's reply and the new 321 sim from Three is excellent value for PAYG, but there is one negative point to bear in mind.

Three may have the best 3G network but that is now all you can use with a Three sim. There is no Three 2G network to fall back on in those areas where you can't get a 3G signal. I bought a Nokia 301 to use with a 321 sim and was intending to dump my Orange PAYG but having run the two phones in tandem for the last month have decided to keep the Orange as my main phone for incoming calls as it has far better UK coverage. I use the Three PAYG phone for making calls, texts and internet when possible as the 321 rates are far cheaper than any Orange tariff.

Also related to the above, if you do decide to run a 3G phone on the Three network make sure that you set it to operate on 3G only and don't set it to "Auto" otherwise it will constantly search for (and fail to find) GSM (2G) in areas where it can't get a 3G signal. I found this out during my first week with the Nokia 301 as the battery was going flat in under 2 days. It now lasts about a week between charges since I changed the settings to 3G only.

    Hope this helps your deliberations.

Have you considered porting your Orange number across to White Mobile? More details here

Same network coverage with far more competitive rates than Orange and free voicemail.

Agreed, I only had a quick look at CPW as the OP specifically mentioned visiting them. CPW could have explained the 3G requirement for using 3 Mobile and offered a 3 compatible handset.
