Am I the only one finding Scottish Power cheap ?
I'm looking at a good fixed deal and the Scottish Power fixed until Jan 2017 looks pretty good for me, but I don't see anybody else on any forum or web site mention Scottish Power and even all the comparison sites don't seem to list them in the results.
I'm starting to think i'm missing something here!
I have done comparisons with various fixed deals from EDF, First utility, British Gas and Npower using my total used Gas and Electric for last 12 months and quite tempted by Scottish Power (i'm also currently with them so easy to switch).
Prices quoted as follows: (Gas and Elec with Economy 7)
Scottish Power fixed Jan 2017 - £177/month
EDF fixed March 2017 - £194/month
First Utility fixed Jan 2016 - £180/month
British Gas fixed July 2015 - £201/month
Npower fixed March 2017 -£195/month.
First Utility Fixed April 2015 - £158/month. (sounds quite good, but not sure about First Utility as there seems to be a lot of bad reports about them, any comments on them?)
First of all, yes I know my bills are horrendous!, thats another story.
So apart from First Utility which i'm not sure about as a company, Scottish Power looks ok. Can anyone suggest a reason why they just don't seem to get mentioned anywhere? Have I missed anything?
Oh, Scottish Power rates are as follows in case anything stands out:
Elec:
Daily Serv charge: 38.22p
Day KWh 14.329p
Night KWh 6.574p
Gas:
Daily serv charge: 38.22p
All KWh 3.956p

I am on Scottish Power Online Fixed Price Energy January 2014, which ends 31st December 2013.
I am waiting for the new Scottish Power Online Fixed Price Energy March 2015, which ends 31st March 2015. uswitch.com is showing it, possibly prematurely, as other places are not, including the Scottish Power official website.
This will cover two winters, at a much cheaper price than the January 2017. The January 2017 only covers up to 31st December 2016, so you are fixed for 1.3 winters more. Prices will have to go up at 15% per year for the January 2017 deal to save you significant money.0 -

I like that there are no cancellation fees if you switch to another ScottishPower tariff. Doesn't seem to be a direct debit discount though, which is odd.
EDIT: Oh you probably mean the v2, which is direct debit only: http://www.scottishpower.co.uk/products/fixed-price-energy/
Ouch, that would still cost me 36% more than my current tariff. :eek:0 -

so your going to pay in the region of £91 extra a year based on all electric 12000 units used, abviously u may have duel fuel so figures will vary and maybe more , (I have all electric with economy 7 (70%) so I just used my useage to get a figure) to move from Energy January 014 deal to the March 2015 (that's assuming the 2015 is still on come January 2015)
if it isn't then that figure could rise even further with the impending increases, how much extra do you think your going to pay from 2015 to 2016 if you stay on a one year fix deal, note that the 2015 tariff u choose will be considerably more than previous one due to the price hikes from this year and no doubt winter 2014
and remember when you say prices will need to rise by 17% the figure by SSE of 8.2% does not reflect the true unit cost for those on variable deals (cheapest) as some will soon find out that figure of 8.2% will be much higher than official figure in real terms when they find out their new Unit price increase on their letters0 -

I actually already had this one on my spreadsheet, and the total cost on last years usage comes to £172/month. I would rather go with the fixed 2017 at £177/month.
Unless we are looking at something different, the only difference between the 2 deals is the daily standing charge (approx 10p difference on gas and elec), the rates are otherwise the same.
Again, this is what confuses me, people keep going for different offers that seem to work out better for them but none seem suitable for me.
Maybe it's my usage that is so different to others, as in I am on economy 7 but have to admit just don't make use of making the most out of the night reduced rate.
Some interesting comments though, so thanks to those.
Will keep looking and try and decide what is best.0 -
it may work out different as each area as different prices, while it may work out cheaper for you on SP 2017, someone in a diff area like myself I assume find npower 2017 cheaper than SP. also I use Economy 7 around 70% which also brings the cost down overall0

I think you are looking at the (v2) version, which expires on 28th February 2015. I am talking about the one that expires on 31st March 2015.
For Consumption of:
Gas 25,000kWh
Electricity 3,000kWh
Using Scottish Power official website Online quote:
£1,406.00 Online Fixed Price Energy December 2014 (31st December 2014)
£1,565.13 Fixed Price Energy March 2015 (v2) Online (28th Feb 2015)
£1,632.12 Help Beat Cancer Fixed Price Energy January 2017 Online (31st December 2016)
Using uswitch.com, there is a DIFFERENT tariff, NOT shown on Scottish Power's website:
£1,401.65 Online Fixed Price Energy March 2015 (31st March 2015)
tfspark found it on uswitch.com too.

Assuming Online Fixed Price Energy March 2015,
expiring 31st March 2015 will be available.
For Consumption of:
Gas 25,000kWh
Electricity 3,000kWh
£1,401.65 Online Fixed Price Energy March 2015 (31st March 2015)
£1,632.12 Help Beat Cancer Fixed Price Energy January 2017 Online (31st December 2016)
Assuming 8% increase per year, applied 1st November each year,
let us also assume we can get a 15 month fix (two winters) in October each year of:
2013 October £1,400
2014 October £1,512
2015 October £1,633 (Parity with January 2017 fix)
2016 October £1,763
2017 October £1,904
Compare the March 2015 fix to the January 2017 fix.
£1,632.12 - £1,401.65 = £230 saved from October 2013 to September 2014.
Since the bulk of the saving is in the winter months,
let us say £150 saved from October 2014 to March 2015.
So £230+£150=£380 saved, for the duration of the March 2015 fix.
During 2015, before the 1st November price rise,
I can get another 15 month fix at £1,633, same as the January 2017 fix.
If I get a 15 month fix at £1,633 from October 2015,
it will get me to December 2016, same as the January 2017 fix.
Being on standard tariff during summer is not a problem,
due to the low consumption.
So, assuming 8% price rise per year,
I would be paying less than the January 2017 fix in the first half,
then pay the same in the second half.
Obviously, if the annual increase is 15%, I would be kicking myself.
I shall be praying that fracking will bring down energy prices,
so we can all get cheaper deals from March 2015.
My actual consumption last year was Gas 35,000kWh and Electricity 5,000kWh, but there were extra people throughout the winter, who liked it warm, and used the tumble dryer a lot. Should be less this year. On 35,000/5,000, I would be saving the price of a holiday by choosing the March 2015 fix.0 -

Many thanks for the detailed response. I can see the tariff you are referring to on Uswitch. Will try and ring through to Scottish Power and see what I can find out. If you have any luck with getting the deal please do let us know...0 -
The Online Fixed Price Energy December 2014 has
NO cancellation charges
Use the Get quote link on the Scottish Power website to confirm.
So you can switch to the December 2014, then switch to March 2015 when it comes out, which will ensure you escape any price rises this winter.
I want to ride my (cheaper) existing Online Fixed as long as I can, up to 31st December 2013.
The fantasy is:
Scottish Power uses E.On speak like "NO PRICE RISE THIS YEAR", meaning price rise on 2nd January 2014: BUT I had switched to the March 2015 fix on 15th December 2013.;)0
