Unhappy with Sky

Options
Hi, I'm new and first post so hope you can help. We have Sky for landline, broadband and basic TV. Had it for 4 years since we moved in. Cannot get Virgin as new build and dont want BT. I've asked for new Sky box and modem as both are old and not working properly. Sky want me to buy both, which I dont want to do (or think I should have to when they are free to new customer).

Can I cancel my contract with Sky and then take out in my husband's name (so then a new custome). Would we be able to keep our telephone number (my kids have only just learnt it so dont want to swap really, daft I know). Not sure if I have to cancel every thing or just tv and broadband. If I cancel phone too can hubby then ask for same number? Sky sales man in shopping centre said just to cancel it and he'll sort it out but not sure if he's just after a sale and then I'll have problems.

Thanks for reading :j

  • You were a new customer at one point, have you forgotten that?

I personally would not trust the guys at the shopping centres, they are just after a sale and won't worry about the repercussions afterwards

Cancelling and then signing up in your husband's name is a risk (moreso if you try to retain the number), you might end up with no service

Best bet is trying to negotiate a good price for them unless of course you don't mind if you did end up with no TV

Phone them up and try and cancel, chance's are they will try and keep you by offering the items for free.

As you have a line to the house then the BT wiring is in place, there may be a lot more providers you can use. Look at SamKnows for who can provide phone and service you can use.

Worst case is you go to someone else for phone and broadband, and get a Freesat box as the disk is up and pointing in the right place (its as simple as swapping 2 or 3 cables over to the new box for a Freesat box or just replacing the viewing card for a freesat from sky card), which may be a lot cheaper overall than Sky is currently anyway.

If you want a new broadband router you can get one for free but it will put you in contract for a further 12 months for the Broadband only.

Thanks for your replies. I've asked for deals and there's none. I've offered to sign up to a new contract both TV and broadband to get the new router and sky box but again no good. They want me to buy both which I cant afford to do.
I might cancel and see what happens :(

Just ring and ask to cancel-once you get through to retentions then you'll speak to someone with authority to hand out the freebies you want.
Tier 1 CS drones simply don't have that power.
It's no good just saying 'if not I want to cancel'; you must get through to retentions.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
