The intention of buying the new kindle was because my current one is almost full.... so I wouldn't really want all my previous purchases downloading to the new one. 
OK but you do realise that your existing Kindle doesn't have to be 'almost full'. You can 'Delete From This Device' any number of books and free up space. Assuming they are Amazon purchases, they will all still be available in the Amazon Cloud for download again whenever you like, so long as your Kindle remains registered to your Amazon account....
