The oddest part of the story are the figures, the article claims they stole £3k of stock and sold it for £30K, even allowing for NHS discounts that's some mark up.

Explains why the prices of gloves have gone up at the carboot.

I was buying boxes for £2. Mostly £4 now with a few at the £3 mark.

I did wonder if people were stealing them from work to sell.

They were never great sellers, we used to get loads going through the auction a few years ago and would rarely get to £1/box. Still not sure how anyone can get 10 times the price for any of that stuff. In my experience of hospitals they aren't the most savvy when it comes to buying in supplies.

Just shows how stupid people can be.
Just think. If she had invested her own cash in buying/selling these items then she would have built-up quite a successful business. Instead, she chose to steal off the Tax payer instead. I will assume that the Courts will order her to pay back the £3k+ that she stole in goods ?.
If so, still leaves her a healthy profit to re-invest in new stock to keep the business rolling & growing (after registering with the HMRC of course).

Not caught be eagle eyed staff or hospital procedures - but grassed up by someone they no-doubt got cockey with and told all about it on a bottle of half price tesco wine.

A bit like benefit fraudsters, tax evaders and the like, nearly all rumbled by friends, relatives or colleagues,
  • They look like the worlds dumbest criminals in that newspaper shot. Just imagine the brain power that went into that business model!

I am appalled that these thieves steal from the NHS and basically only get a slap on the wrist.

My guess would be that they stole far more from the NHS than either have admitted to. It really isn't possible to take goods of that nature valued at £3,000 and get £30,000 selling them on Ebay. Chances are they stole nearer £50,000. The hospital have admitted to not being able to audit.
Working it out, if the figures are accurate she stole about £400/year which would pretty much be a box of gloves and a few syringes a week, I'd imagine some doctors take more than that. To end up in court there must have been much more being taken.

I don't think you should under-estimate the impact of both the case and their criminal record on the future employment prospects and the fact they will be branded as idiots by most of their (remaining) friends and family. And yes, unlike many would-be-criminals think, you don't do time for the money. You have to repay the proceeds of crime also. The proceeds of crime they will have to pay is the 30,000 they made, not the 3000 they stole, and I expect this couple, one sat in a wheel chair and the other looking like she can bearly lift her own weight, I expect will probably never finish paying it.
