Idiots guide to blocking spam to outlook express?

Hi guys/gals,

Does anyone know of a good FREE program that will block spam to my outlook express email address please?

I've suffered for a while with spam to this account and tried blocking senders but get 80-100 spam emails a day and it's getting worse!

Just come back from 2 weeks away and opened my email and had over 2000, of which about 20 weren't spam!

I'm not totally thick but the idiots guide to how i set something up with outlook with be very much appreciated!

Cheers

Thanks, i've downloaded, installed also, but when i put my details in and press test settings it comes back with:
There was an error connecting to POP account, check your settings

This after i copied and pasted my POP3 and SMTP settings from outlook!

Any idea's how i can get it to work?

    Cheers

Presumably your ISP doesn't offer any sort of server side spam filtering?

The most effective way I found to avoid spam on my childrens PCs was to only allow emails from people in their address book, by setting up a rule.

Any friends who wish to send emails would need to be added, and the rule could be switched on or off as required.

Who is your email account with -Yahoo, Hotmail, BT Internet ??
    I have numerous email accounts.

I have similiar problem with 1 account, get 1000+ spam/month.
The Bulk Mail filter in Yahoo is excellent & filters most of these, but it's still a pain, as you can never be sure you won't miss a valid email, unless you check all the Bulk Mail.

This problem account was the account I gave out generally for email subscriptions, purchases etc.

I have setup a new email account & gradually been updating my subscriptions to the new account, by changing the email address. I check the problem account for any valid emails & will then move these to new account.

Eventually I should get no valid emails to old account & can ignore/close this spammed account.

Ps: I have email addresses that I haven't used for years, that still get spam.
Spam will not go away, there is no way round it.

I've found the most effective way is what you do with your email addresses. Get a domain (mydomain.co.uk), don't use a catch-all option. Sign up with different people using a unique email address (eg amazon@mydomain.co.uk). Those addresses forward to a unique/random address (eg fgedfg34345@mydomain.co.uk) that you pick up the mail from. It means absolutely no filtering (so no missing mail from false positives) and yet I get zero spam. If there's ever a problem with one of the addresses you can ditch it and replace it with another, not only that but because of using unique addresses you know which company let your address slip to the spammers.

I use a Gmail account, which is excellent at weeding out spam, and pop3 it to my outlook client. Works a treat. You also end up with a searchable on-line archive of your email if anything goes wrong with your local machine. I wouldn't do this with highly sensitive email, but mine generally isn't, so highly workable solution.

Thanks for the responses so far guys, still haven't managed to set up the 1st program that was recogmended so looks a no go.

Have looked at the rest of the messages and want to keep my email address if possible. It's now with Orange but is an old Freeserve account so doesn't come with any filters etc.

Just looked at the 'setting up rules' and this could be an option(if i can work it out!lol)

The other option maybe to try another program like mailwasher or gmail, does anyone else have any thoughts on these programs and how easy are they to set up?

    cheers
