Graduation gift

We've been invited to a party to celebrate the graduation & birthday of a distant/extended family member. We've only met her a couple of times (although we've met her parents a few times now). What would be an appropriate gift?
Obviously there's champagne but it would be nice to do something else. Unfortunately we know nothing about her (tastes, style, hobbies, etc), we don't even know what degree she got, but when I asked her mother for ideas she said Oh just bring yourselves don't worry about it. But we don't want to go empty handed. I'm usually quite good at this sort of thing but my mind is a complete blank on this one. Any ideas?

A 'certificate tube'? Not sure what they're called! Silver or leather maybe?
Photo album/frame to put graduation pic/s in?

That was my first thought too.....something like this:

My thought was a sliver photo frame. Just lately it seems to be the answer to most of my present dilemmas..anniversaries; 50th birthdays;house warming .Honestly I thinking of buying in bulk !0

A nice pen?0

That certificate holder is one of the ugliest things I've ever seen!
Each to their own and all that but I can't imagine many graduates that would be pleased to receive one of those.0 -
If you don't know her well, I wouldn't buy her anything permanent as it may be permanently consigned to her parents loft! As a new graduate she may move around for work several times, go travelling or whatever, so I'd probably go with something drinkable or cash/vouchers. Even a tenner on a Starbucks/Costa Coffee card is a nice thought when you're just starting work or trudging up and down the country for interviews.0

Take her parent's advice and don't take a gift.loose does not rhyme with choose but lose does and is the word you meant to write.0

Being a student, I'm sure a crate of strong lager would be appreciated.;)0

I would agree, something consumable would go down well. I would think Starbucks £10 voucher if she's working in a city. If she's in her own place I'd go £10 M&S voucher so she can get a nice dinner.... even with the comment of "have a celebratory meal" or something like that.

Might get a groupon (or other) deal for a lunch, or afternoon tea (although obviously it'll be for two!), or a manicure if she's girlie.
