Every single ISP and telcom requires 30 days notice to end a contract. It doesn't matter how many years you've been with them. Your completion date dispute with your buyer is nothing to do with them, it's a third party dispute.
They haven't charged you a 'penalty'. They've charged you the full month to the end of your notice period.
If they are so bad, why have you not left them before '20 years'?
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

Not my choice I can tell you that, my husband loves repeats of Heartbeat and Last of the Summer Wine, I would have dumped them years ago.

    :)

What I'm trying to say to you is that there is nothing surprising in what Virgin has done. Life's too short to get wound up about these things.

I'm not religious but the words of the Serenity Prayer are as helpful today as they always have been:

God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change,

The courage to change the things I can,

And wisdom to know the difference.

Don't let your daily life be blighted by railing against things you have no control over.

You are right of course, I have always had a strong sense of justice and of course there is none for consumers only profits in the eyes of suppliers! In any case moving house is stressful enough without all this ;)

Your talk of "justice" is obviously not based on the contract you have.

    What does it say?

And is it Virgin's fault you are moving at short notice?
    1. Have you tried to Google the answer?
    2. If you were in the other person's shoes, how would you react?
    3. Do you want a quick answer or better understanding?

I wonder why it is we get treated to a rant from somebody or other about some company or other requiring payment according to an agreed contract.

    Pathetic.

Because it appears a lot of this website is nit about being clever with your money, but about "how can I get away without paying what I owe", unfortunately.

We've had both Freeview (bedroom) and Freesat (lounge) for 3 1/2 years now and are quite happy with it. Funny enough the only thing I would change to is the Virgin service but unfortunately we're rural and don't get it. Best TV service I've ever had at the best price.

The customer is not always right. So they unplugged your VCR before... Get over it.

The world and their service providers don't owe you anything.
  • Moving home is incredibly stressful and in my experience sorting out the comms side of it is the worst.
My experience of virgin was very similar, when having been told that I couldn't retain my email address and that they wanted to charge £12 p.c.m more for a slower service in a rural location I finally threw in the towel after 15 years.
Having cancelled and paid the notice period they then denied the cancellation and tried to Bill me for 2 additional months!
Fortunately I'd kept all correspondence and was able to sort it out.
    Good luck with your move!
