Lets not forget that these companies like Centrica are making sure they are manipulating to keep the prices high on teh commodities markets and making a hell of a lot of money on the back of it and then crying poverty to us that wholesale pricves are high....

OFGEM promised to look into it earlier this yer, but they are toothless:

All the while making ridiculously large profits:

£13.7 billion, for the period ending 30th June.

It's all just a huge cartel, whilst hiding behind smoke and mirrors

Because they have much more information than the government these companies are in the position to make the best decisions. They must be more efficient than the government could possibly be.

Who they make the best decisions in favour of and for whose benefit they are efficient is not so clear.

The profits were paid out in the good times rather than invested and now we are paying the price. Where have we heard that before. Run things on the never never and it is no surprise.

Sigh. Listed companies are meant to make profits. It's their obligation to their shareholders.

If Labour don't like it they should have renationalised them. They had 13 years to do that. And Miliband was energy secretary.

This whole furore over energy prices is just Labour desparately trying to find a new angle to win votes as their only angle since this parliament began ("austerity will make the recession worse") has been proven to be utter bunk.

We could and should have lower energy prices in this country. Scrapping the ridiculous & ill-timed green measures would be the best start.

China must be laughing themselves sick. The UK signs up to green measures that make it's power massively expensive, coal mines shut down etc. Their new strategy requires them to build new nuclear - which they're going to pay the Chinese among others, well over the odds to do. The Chinese meanwhile, get the massive contract to build UK Nuclear, whilst sticking their fingers up at meeting green measures themselves.

An utter mess, the coalition could hardly have handled this worse.

An utter mess that has been decades in the making.

The present lot could have reversed the Millibuds green legislation if they had so desired.

The whole energy prices isn't just labour or the conservatives (coalition is a smoke screen when it suits) it is governments being rolled over lock stock and barrel for a basic non differentiated commodity.

I am surprised we can't buy Super gas that keeps our boiler cleaner and burning with a bluer flame or electricity V power to charge devices a nano second quicker or give a flatscreens sharper definition.

Smart meters will give them even more choice in how they profit from energy use.

Generally when people bankroll others there is eventually a very painfull payback whetehr that be the Chinese or the Church Commissioners. The Chinese and the French must have a smile on their face with a deal underwritten by government. We still don't have a designated, costed repository or mangement plan for the waste so whatever funding they will place in trust to deal with will ultimately prove a token gesture.

In the absence of going dirty, Nuclear is necessary, I can't believe that using a communist state and the French Government to provide it is the best way forward.

the nuclear deal is a poor one although we don't know the full details yet
    - the basis megawatt price is double the existing price so we have a guaranteed increase in the cost whatever happens

    - the guaranteed price is in real terms so inflation will be added automatically

    - there will be numerous little clauses that allow the price to rise but not fall

    - no plan for disposal of nuclear waste has been made other than a vague 'will share' the cost' ... basically the taxpayer will pick up the billing 30 years time.

-plus all the things we don't know yet.

I wonder how much it costs the companies and in in turn us each time we switch?

If you include the cost of marketing, cashback, introducer fee, administration to open an account, close account - £100?

A nice add on to our bills if everyone was doing that every 18 months. Very efficient.

That was revenue not profit. Profit was £767m after tax so for a company the size of Centrica reasonable
  • Hi there...I currently have a fixed dual fuel fixed rate tariff with edf that runs till march 2014. It's obviously cheaper than the fixes on the market that tun till 2015 and 2017 BUT should I move now and pay either 10%or20% higher respectively for this winter in order to ensure I am tied in for fuel for the next 2 winters. I just don't know what's best....help please!
