Transfer W8 Pro upgrade license?

I've got two laptops. Toshiba has Vista and the Dell has Windows 8 Pro upgrade over Windows 7.
As I plan to sell the Dell and like Windows 8 I want to move the W8 license to the Toshiba.
(Or just put back the old HD with W7 into the Dell and run an upgrade on the Toshiba.)
So my question is about if I can de-register W8 and then register it on another machine?
I wouldn't be cheating on anyone if I did but can this maneuver actually be executed?

Yes but you may need to go through to an operator when activating .
The MS activation will probably reject but allow you to connect to MS and say i have removed it and its only in use on one machine .
But the critical part is if Win 8 or Win 7 is an OEM as opposed to retail versions .
OEM is tied to the machine it came with and does not transfer .

Just a further thought ... is your Tosh, presumably oldish hence Vista, really up to running 8?... DaveHappily retired and enjoying my 14th year of leisureI am cleverly disguised as a responsible adult.Bring me sunshine in your smile0

Actually both computers are roughly the same age, both came with dual core CPUs. The chipset on the Dell however doesn't allow upgrades like the ones I've managed with the Toshiba. A massive change with a £30 CPU upgrade so the Toshiba is lightyears ahead of the Dell now. (Was Intel T3200, now T9300).Just a further thought ... is your Tosh, presumably oldish hence Vista, really up to running 8?0 -

Yes, I'll probably go ahead, set up the W8 Pro on the Toshiba and phone MS for activation. If for some obscure reasons MS isn't happy with that I'll have to continue using the W8.1 preview or switch to a 2012 6 months trial.
Needless to say, I haven't had Vista running on it for ages. I don't even have the installation but I've got the license.
I just can't justify spending £££ on an operating system for a laptop that's almost 6 years old. It needs Windows though as I use it for MS software development.0 -

Toshiba Satellite Pro L300. Came with 1GB of memory, rubbish 5400rpm hard drive and an even worse Intel T3200 dual core.
Now it has T9300 Core 2 Duo, 4GB memory and an SSD.

IIRC Windows 8 is often slightly faster/better on the same hardware than Vista if drivers are available.
From memory vista/7/8 are all from the same basic code base (assuming you keep to the x86 or x64 version and don't swap between them), with MS spending a fair chunk of their development time to try and fix the problem of code bloat they'd become known for, increasing the efficiency (I can't remember the figures, but apparently they cut the number of lines of code down quite significantly between 7 and 8).0 -
