  • 5C or 5S? I've just upgraded to a 5S from a 4S and am very pleased i did. The 5S is a lot lighter and despite having a bigger screen, doesn't feel bulky or anything. TouchID (fingerprint sensor) works brilliantly and battery life is very good...get around 2 days on a full charge with moderate use. My 5S cost me only £100 or so as i managed to sell my old 4S for £250 and also flogged a brand new Xperia L for £200 which Vodafone gave me for free on a new contract:p

Technically it's iPhone 5 - every single technical detail is identical, apart from 4G LTE chip, which has been improved to be compatible with more frequency bands. But this makes not a big difference in Europe.
Only difference is in the case. Which - in my opinion - is much better than alloy case of iPhone 5 which is easier to scratch than wet paint and will look awful in few weeks.
Bad thing in upgrade from 4S is you will have to change all your cables and devices. If you have dock or stereo with dock - it will not work. Unless you buy horrible overpriced adapter from Apple (3rd party adapters usually doesn't support audio)

If you're after a 5C I would advise waiting. It's apparently been a huge letdown sales-wise (given it's an iPhone) so far and some US retailers are already discounting it. I think that will have to happen here as well as the networks have apparently got large stockpiles of this phone in their warehouses. Unlike the 5S!
  • I was looking at the 5C as I would pay £120 to upgrade Early and then £99 for the 5C Unlimited calls, texts and 1GB per month would be 26.90

On the 5S the Upgrade Fee is the same, but pay £119 upfront and then 37.00 per month for unlimited calls, texts and 1GB

I am unsure tho if the 5S would be worth this compared to the 5C

  • In that case go for the 5C. Despite having a plastic back it still feels premium quality and as others have said its essentially an iphone 5 which IMHO is still a very good smartphone.
  • But give it a few weeks and look for the killer deals that will almost certainly emerge to clear stocks...

Are you with Vodafone by any chance? Their retentions offered me their red plan with 1GB data for £14 per month (usual price £28 pm) + free Xperia L handset thrown in...however i chose the 2GB red plan for £17pm and put the sim in an iphone 5S bought from Apple. If you are with Vodafone no reason why they can't offer you something similar but you'd have to wait until you're out of contract before retentions called you.

  • I would do the maths on that upgrade as it's going to lock you to a contract for 2 years and the networks are in a state of flux with the 4G rollout. 2 years is a long time to be wishing you had the network swapping ease of a 30 day SIM only contract.

1GB of data is pointless if you want to take advantage of 4G when it rolls out, which I guess is why you are looking at a 5C (or 5S) phone?

My OH and myself each use well over 3 GB per month on 3G, and that's without really trying (listening to internet radio at work, a bit of BBC/ITV Player, some Youtube, Skype video calls overseas, etc). So I would be wary of being talked into a low data upgrade which is a great deal for the network, followed by more cost when you find the need to upgrade again for a higher data allowance.

For cost comparison, the "One Plan" SIM only from Three gives 2000 any network minutes, 5000 3 to 3 minutes, 5000 texts and unlimited data with tethering, there are no restrictions on using the data for voice over IP services such as Skype. Cost is £18 per month on a 30 day contract or £15 per month for a 12 month contract. There is no extra cost for their 4G when it starts rolling out later this year.
