i wonder if the reply the OP received was a standard response, just a thought.

I would expect that if you complete a form online and submit it the service sends an email acknowledging receipt and saying they will look at it. Then when they have a human being looking at what has been submitted they'll say they have nothing to investigate.

It seems to me that the OP wants to make denigrating comments about a particular nationality. Perhaps the reason for the thread, hiding behind misstatements about what an ombudsman service might offer.

:D Finally money on my account. After nearly 4 weeks of waiting. I have gotten a beautiful letter sent by post from my bank with apologies and with a reference to my complaint to Ombudsman. It looks like they cooperate. As they explain the reason for the delay in funds crediting my account was that the envelope deposited in the bank was stuck within the post box shoot. My friend is trustworthy. It would be more painful to loose a friend rather than the funds. I have just imagined a crime story whilst waiting for the payment. In the beginning of this weeks I also sent request to HMRC regarding my cheque. I haven't got the reply yet. It looks like they are going to say that the cheque was paid to my account :). Ombudsman is pretty quick. :) I have learnt a lot what can happen to the cheque since it is sent to receiver.

Credit to cheated? for coming back with the resolution. :T

This was no doubt a valuable lesson for them, and it sounds as if they know that.

This is not the end of the story yet.
It is more than 2 weeks since the cheque was paid to my account. I called HMRC when I had it paid to cancel my request for checking who it was paid to. But there was only automatic voice mail. Yesterday I got reply by post from HMRC saying that they are arranging cancellation of the missing cheque and will issue a replacement.
My question at the time I didn't know what happened was whether the cheque was cleared from their account and if yes could they provide me the details where it was paid to. Now the reply the are going to cancel the original cheque and if I receive it I should not attempt to cash it. 2 weeks after it was cashed and 6 weeks after it was brought to bank. Yesterday I posted a letter to HMRC saying the cheque was paid already to my account. I wouldn't wonder if they withdraw funds from my account and send me a new cheque. Why they do not check where it was paid to?

You've done the right thing in telling HMRC that the cheque has been found and has now cleared. They'll find this out themselves, but having told them already will avoid any suspicion of an attempt at fraud.

HMRC are not the most efficient organisation these days.

More specifically, a cheque cannot be deducted from your account more than 6 working days after it was paid in unless you are a party to fraud. So if it cleared over two weeks ago, no they can't deduct it from your account.

That's good news for me. HMRC is no that bad in what and how much they are doing. It is just difficult to contact them. No email service. And automated phone service good for typical problems (press number if...and finally after typing issue number I got automatic service reply they were going to reply within 5 weeks and call has ended up without connecting to operator to explain details). Not good for explaining specific things. Letter issued by HMRC on 29 of Oct has come up on 8th of Nov. They could have started to work on this just after money reached my account maybe less than 6 working days. Anyway now it is more than 2 weeks since payment was made and money is still on my account :). They will get my letter soon.
  • Dear all,

sorry for writing this, but I'm quite impressed because I'm experiencing pretty much the same problem (cheque from HMRC, payed in my account at a Barclays branch by a friend of mine using the envelope, no news from the 12th of November).
I called barclays customer service on Monday evening, I spoke with a manager who promised to deal with it the day after with the branch, and then call me back.
I am still waiting his call, but really thinking of calling hmrc to cancel that cheque (and, if it's possible, pay in the money to my account without sending me a new cheque).

Anyway, this thread is very useful for me, it gives me some good hints, thanks OP!
