You re wasting your time with the police, bank and ombudsman until you know what happened to the cheque. You currently have no idea whether it has simply been lost within Barclays (in which case HMRC cancel and reissue it) or whether your conspiracy theory about it being cashed by your "friend" is correct (in which case you involve the police).

Ombudsman deals with lost and stolen cheques. I am sure they will also get information from HMRC and do it faster than me. Ombudsman can check the whole cycle of cheque clearence. If it wasn't paid to anyone they will tell me that and I will be surprised.:)

If that is the only proof that your friend is offering that they paid the cheque in then it is worthless. Anyone could go into a branch and pick up an unused envelope and take it away with them.

That is why I reported it to the police and was directed to Ombudsman:).

The ombudsman will not get involved until you have exhausted the company concerned's complaints procedure. As you don't know which company that is how can you complain to them.

If by some miracle they did get involved, your complaint would get added to the piles of other complaints that they have and have to wait its turn, so it is unlikely that they would do it faster than you writing to HMRC and telling them that the cheque was lost and asking them to reissue it.

The police can't do anything unless a crime has been committed or is suspected. As it stands you have no knowledge whether the cheque has been lost or cashed by your friend.

You may want to fix it quickly but sometimes you do have to follow the process. HMRC call centre operators will not have access to the bank account. There is probably a specialist team for tracing missing payments. So if they say you need to write in then that is what you'll have to do - if it needs to be done anyway the faster you do it the better rather than asking here for advice that is what you already know.

I'd be very careful if you now think your trusted friend is capable of fraud against you and what else you may have given them access to.
Remember the saying: if it looks too good to be true it almost certainly is.

They did get involved. I am aware I can be in the queue. Even ff HMRC give me the answer faster than Ombudsman and tell me that the cheque was cleared I will save a couple of weeks reporting it earlier to Ombudsman who follows all the clearing cycle. I would have to report anyway to Ombudsman afterall. I did it first to Ombudsman because I am abroad and Ombudsman has got email service, HMRC does not use email service. Ombudsman confirmed immediately saying that they accepted my report and will answer within 6 weeks but it usually takes shorter.

Police does not check the cycle of cheque clearence. They did right and gave me the link to Ombudsman Services who deal with it and noone is going to do it better.
HMRC did not tell me to write in anything as you say. They told me to contact the bank who would certainly know what happened to the cheque. What happened next is what I said in my previous posts.
Why did I use this forum? To ask what I asked in my first posts and to get some right suggestions (thanks a lot to hominu user). It looks like some forum users do not remember what I have written earlier and maybe just don't read the whole topic. I am not going to repeat.

Who have you complained to the Ombudsman about? Your bank? It doesn't sound to me - yet - that you actually have a definable complaint. They haven't admitted anything happened to the cheque. They've told you to contact HMRC (presumably they told you that) - you can't really be bothered to do that and I don't think the Ombudsman deals with complaints about HMRC - and you don't actually have one yet anyway

You seem to be running about screaming fraud before you know it's happened

I have not complained about the bank but about lost or stolen cheque giving names and addresses of all the people suspected. Ombudsman have not told me to contact HMRC. Please do read previous posts. Please look at Ombudsman Services website to see what they do.

Which ombudsman have you contacted exactly? I think posters on here are assuming you are talking about the Financial Ombudsman, but they don't offer a service tracing lost cheques, they deal with complaints against regulated companies and as yet you don't have a complaint.

The only Ombudsman Services website I can find is this one and they don't have anything to do with the financial services industry or HMRC.
