Probably anything that sprouts quickly. I've done these with children - and always used cress because it's so easy and also something most of them are familiar with.

Actually, I've just remembered my daughter's did this at Brownies with grass. They then had a competition to see whose 'hair' grew most in the summer hols. Our local flower shop sold more lawn fertiliser those weeks than I think it had ever done :D

The actually make great 'fly squash' removers when washing the car. They are mild enough not to scratch the paintwork but lift off the flys great!!! Scrunch them up, soak in soapy water and rub gently, the fly's are easily lifted off the car.

My mother-in-law use to hang the family's jumpers on the line using old tights. The legs of the tights went through the arms, the tights were pegged to the line along the waist and feet. (the jumpers were well supported, without being stretched or getting peg marks.
This will either be a bit of nostalgia, or an exercise in visualisation.
(I don't have tights or jumpers in my house).

    Ready for more nostalgia?
My Gran use to cut thetops off tights and use them as big elastic bands to hold bundles together.
My gran use to give the legs to a friend , who dyed them, stretched them over wire and turned these into "flowers".
I've seen this idea used to create "insects" too.

How many pairs do you get through?

my mums always used old tights to tie plants to stakes in the garden
  • Found this on the green and ethical money saving forum, but the website has great ideas for things to do with old tights

    http://www.tightsplease.co.uk/index.php?page[cat][]=127

I'm currently using them as ties for my plants - they're so soft they don;t damage them like string does.

I also use old tights to strain my oil after making chips

And Nigella Lawson uses them to secure a bouquet garni while cooking instead of messing about with muslin

    Any other ideas?

I think you can use them to stuff inside sausage shaped pieces of material to make draught excluders.

This is from my local newspaper last week and they have the same notice on the Tightsplease website but it's not very prominent

    Recycle for Charity

The Addis Ababa Fistula Hospital in Ethiopia treats woman who have suffered a fistula injury due to complications in child birth. This is a problem that we no longer have in the developed world.
You can help the wonderful work done by the Addis Ababa Fistula Hospital by sending them your old, clean tights. Ladders and holes are not a problem.
Following their operations the women use the panty parts of the tights to hold their bandages in place. Nothing goes to waste as the legs are woven into rugs.

    You can send your tights to us at the following address and we will ship them on to the hospital;

save some of your laddered tights for wearing under trousers/jeans in winter, keeps your legs really toasty & warm and nobody sees the ladders :)
