TalkTalk advise I should leave my router on 24/7 is this true?

Options
hello moneysavers.

I recently got a new router from TalkTalk. They advise customers on there trouble shooting tips in there set up and connect guide to "....leave your router switched on all the time. switching it off at night can have a big impact on speed, and it can often take up to 3 days for things to get back to normal"

is there any truth in this statement?

why would switching your router off affect speeds when switched on?

what are the ecomonical costs when lewaving a router on 24/7?

    Yes leave your modem/router on.

Most ADSL products take a while to sync at the best speed by adapting the rate until a set balance of speed vs errors is found (basically it'll try to go faster and faster until a certain error rate is met), from memory.
Turning the modem/router off stops that from happening, and can be seen by the equipment at the exchange as a line fault, thus it limits you to a lower speed.

As for costs, depending on your modem/router it's probably only using 10-25 watts maximum when sat on but unused (probably closer to 5 watts). which is pretty tiny - at 10 watts you'd be using a unit of electricity about every 4 days (240watts a day), so you're talking single figure pounds per year..

As a rough guide 1watt is approx £1 if left on 24/7 for a whole year. Obviously prices vary, But its a good guide and not a million miles out.

My O2 router is supposed to be 7 watts, But it gets fairly warm for such a low power usage. I think it uses more.

Not plugged it into my tester to verify though.
